Default Fitting a fighting butt to a completed rod?

Is it possible to fit a fighting butt to a completed rod?

The rod in question has a half wells handle at the moment.

I was thinking of drilling the end cap and fitting a 'rivnut' (effectively inserts a captive nut into the end).

Has anyone retro fitted one and what would you suggest?

Thanks.

This should not be hard. It depends on what kind of reel seat you have, but the principle is the same. What i have done was, that i have cut the end of reel seat off and simply inserted a but mounted on a nice piece of wood into the hole. Although this sounds very simple it is used on some high end rods. I know couse i had one Trident Tl in which the butt was not inserted to the end and you could see the wood on which butt was mounted. I was rather surprised at that time as i asumed this would be done in a more "high tech" way.

Anyway if your reel seat is plastic, it is often possible to remove the rubber cap withouth cutting. If it is metal, simply grind the end part off. Just the final "stopper" do not go into threads. This shall open the hole in your reel seat and from there on,
it is just a matter of what would you like to have. If you want to have a fixed butt in which case you just glue it in or removable, which can be solved with either a nut or threaded bolt etc.

You'll likely get a better mechanical effect by using a ferruled fighting butt fitting into the blank itself - inserting nuts frequently come adrift as the area of hold is fairly weak ( given that most reelseat components are made from Aluminium . )

I've lost count of how many I've done over the last 30 years but the ferruled push in ( or you can glue it in permanently which is better yet ) is the best way I've found .

Best wishes

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I think glueing a spigot in would be the best way.

Time to modify!
