Default Custom cork handle turned on a home made lathe

Heres some pictures of a handle I made, this is for a 6ft 3# that I will be building once the blank arrives. Total length for this handle is 6 1/2" compared to 7" handle that is on my 8 1/2' greyflex. The rings came from Soway componenents and are CG3 grade plain rings and burnt burl corks rings, roughly cost £15 for the rings used. I would have just bought a pre-made grip if I was only going to have a plain handle but thought might aswell give it go a make a custom grip. It's easier than you would think and worth the effort.

Default Handle turning rig

Hey Sculpin,

Really REALLY like your turning rig!

Had been looking at a Flexcoat contraption for $180 + carriage, or a new wood turning lathe for £125.

Yours looks as though it may have cost less! ;-)

Would you let me have instructions on how to make one myself? Or if you fancied making one for me, I'd be delighted to part with some sterling!

Thanks,

Would you send me a private message?

Thanks.

Don't keep it a secret tell all. What's the metal collar opposite drill chuck? cartridge bearing? and how is it fixed in the vertical piece of wood?

Here's mine, a triumph of function over form that mounts on a workmate

Uses model vehicle axle as a mandrel running through model bearings in a scrap timber frame.

Works really well, much more stable than an unsupported drill

Which was the previous arrangement, held in a workmate

And my rod turner

'mechanical' parts
Technobots - Electronic & Mechanical Components
Drier driven by a 3rpm disco ball motor from *bay (as it came with a mains plug), pulleys give options to 18rpm

Its not silent but not noisy either, about like a fridge. The motor itself is about the size of a matchbox within the housing

Something like this but bear in mind 3rpm is too slow to use and needs gearing up to 12-25rpm.
