Thanks for your advice. The rod is cherished but low value, so much as I would love to send it to a repairer, I think a DIY approach is probably best.
In terms of the winding check, I guess this is going to be the really difficult thing to get right, as if the blank is tapered under the cork, getting a winding check to fit flush to the blank is going to mean sliding it down from the ferrule end. Then again, a rubber / flexible one could be the answer, can you buy such a thing or are they all metal / rigid?
