I've got a spinning rod with a full cork handle and sliding reel attachment rings. I'd like to replace the entire handle with full cork (again) and a Fuji winch reel seat.

Due to the taper of the blank, will I have to strip off all of the guides on the bottom section to slide the cork rings and reel fitting down?

Advice from any experienced rod builders / repairers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John,

I guess it depends on how much the rod tapers under the handle. The butt section may be parallel or more likely have only a small taper under the existing handle. In which case you could use masking tape on the blank at the top of the handle and form a parallel section, sliding the corks and reel seat on from the butt end. Add a suitable sized winding check to cover any gap between the top of the handle and the blank.

Thanks for your advice. The rod is cherished but low value, so much as I would love to send it to a repairer, I think a DIY approach is probably best.

In terms of the winding check, I guess this is going to be the really difficult thing to get right, as if the blank is tapered under the cork, getting a winding check to fit flush to the blank is going to mean sliding it down from the ferrule end. Then again, a rubber / flexible one could be the answer, can you buy such a thing or are they all metal / rigid?

if your using a plastic winding check good tip is to soak it in boiling water causing it to expand making your job that little bit easier to run it up the blank

I could replace your cork for you etc, fit the reel seat, windining check etc. Could do a deal with you against reel?

As I don't know what your rod looks like, it's a bit hard to say, BUT as opposed to worrying about a winding check, you can fill the void and create a taper up to the grip (if installed from the butt, which is what I would do.) with epoxy.

It's not hard and you can add a keeper in the new wraps you'll be using to cover the epoxy "bridge". It will work well if you have a wrapping motor turning it until it dries. If you don't have a motor... uh, stay up late... and keep turning to avoid sagging.
