Default Shellac & silk colour preserve

Hi fellow Cane rodmakers... Looking for a tried and tested uk brand shellac or the likes to preserve silk colour..

Being a fan of using no cp in my work, i am making an exception on some builds this winter...

I use international "original" brand varnish and would appreciate hearing from anyone who can reccomend one brand of shellac or the likes over another.... I believe a dewaxed & clear shallac is the way to go?

My work can be viewed at gavennyrodco.blogspot.com

best
matt

What you need to use is just standard white polish it dries clear, Its all the same stuff you will only need a small bottle it will last for ages.
Anything like this

Buy Rustins White French Polish from Axminster, fast delivery for the UK

What you dont use is button polish or garnet polish which has a colour and is used to french polish antiques you could also use heat resistant french polish but thats a little harder to get hold of, and for what you need there is no point so bog standard white polish.

I have a Leonard fairy catskill in the works, well, i say in the works, strips are straight and ready for sanding, roughing, heating ...

I made one of these going by Mikes taper (the original from the leonard house version) and it is a very delicate 2wt..

Im only doing it again as i like bamboo ferrules and used regualr NS before...

Im curious about the Orvis seven three , never cast one.. Having become a fan of the fairy catskill i will be working on a range of rods based around that taper and im sure working my way through the other leonard shorties in the meantime.....

2x 6ft 2 pc cattanachs have been on the bench for too long all ready for building up, theres been just too much going on (sigh)

I have an order for another 7042 which will be ready for spring so i have a few months leeway on that one..

Im yet to make one of Mike shays Li'l debbies, which i hear from many u.s friends is a real sweatie, so at some point during the winter that will get done..

Must order some more cane..Too many tapers not enough time or energy he he he

Have a little peatol lathe now so as all hardware will be made in house, sliding bands & cap & rings...

Plenty of fun for those winter months

whats on the bench Gary?

At the moment I have a lot of restoration and repair working going on since my take over of the popular Sharpes rods range thanks to Scottie rods UK.
Some new builds coming along including the Lee wulff ultimates, the ever popular garrison 8ft rods, a couple of presentation rods work is steady keeps coming in, I can not complain especially in these days.

A big thanks to every one who shows an interest and keeps me ticking over.
Very much appreciated

Your cane tip over ferrule is very cool. Does it offer a worthwhile improvement in action, or do you use the step change in blank diameter to create a compound (more parabolic?) action?

I just keep the same half way point diameter for male spigot , extended by 1" & parallel.... Female is purely .040" per strip over the halfway diameter....

I think some tapers show a flat spot more than others, due to the length of the swelled portion leading up to the female ferrule, so in respect of that , i fins these rods can work in a few different ways which i soon came to realise... For certain aspects and circumstance on stream, one can optimise the tip portion throughout their cast, for different tight casts etc , where longer casts will start to optimise the flex below the spigot & fighting a heavy fish will soon harmonise the taper throughout... Its an oddity , but when you are out fishing these things you come to realise , like any rod, you get used to it... If you only ever had one rod, you make it work & you get used to it.. For small streams , rivers and mountain lakes, these are the rods i fish , i fish nothing else as I enjoy fishing this ferrule type very much..

I did try the reduced spigot method, wasnt 100% happy with what i did... Maybe i will revisit that someday
I am a fisherman, and for my fishing i make rods that cast a fly and catch fish.. If i dont have to buy or make silver ferrules it is a bonus that is why i love making a bamboo ferrule sleeve, the material is already available....

I havent yet made a seperate form to make Bjarnes type ferrule but i can see me doing so in the future... He was my inspiration many years ago now, & still is...

I think the bamboo ferrule like this does make the rod feel more parabolic , even without the newer reduced portion compund? method... It surprising how many tapers work without modification

How are you going about your ferrules Taniwha. Are you making them the same way as i do? How do you find them to be?

Cheers

FF, the world of cane building awaits the days when I have more leisure time. I have cut a few spigot in glass
