Default Restoring cane - IMAGES - tips guides/ferrules/straightening

Hi all,

I am restoring my first rod, a cheap cane I bought on eBay. I have started stripping it, and have a few questions:

1) How do I remove the tip guide? I have removed the whipping, but it is also glued. Without knowing what glue is used, and not wanting to damage the cane, what is my first test to get the tid guide off, preferably without losing an inch of cane? See image below.

2) Is there a way of removing the below pressed ferrule, without further weakening the cane? The shim to the cane is how I bought it, rather crude I know. This ferrule is being removed entirely, as I am taking the top two sections from a three piece 9' to make a 2 piece 6' rod. However, I have the same problem for the other ferrule. I was thinking perhaps a very small metal drill bit to drill out the pressed in point on the ferrule, trying not to touch the cane? Any other tips?

3) How do I remove bend in cane? The rod is still nice and springy, but must have been stored damp or similar prior to me getting it. The top section thus is no longer true, having two noticeable bends in. I have tried to photgraph this:

Tips, tricks, advice - all gratefully received.

Thanks,

N

tip rings can be removed by slowly heating/pulling without too much force. A leather glove is useful.

blanks can be straightened but they don't always stay straight if the bamboo is damaged. This is a demo on a new blank but the principle is the same:

A cigarette lighter and a glove. Get somebody to heat the metal whilst you with glove on one hand (hand at the ring) pull parallel to the direction of the rod whilst your assistant gently flames the ferrule on the ring.

Heat will do the job, that ferrule looks as though it was badly replaced looking at the way the cane has been reduced, you will also find that what looks like whipping along the cane is a plastic finish, I have a few sections of these rods,

TIP RING TIP

An alternative to leather gloves is to loop an elastic band through the loop and hook the other end to a door handle or similar. Then as previously suggested GENTLY heat with a lighter. The tension in the elastic will pull the tube off as soon as its ready. This way you avoid over heating.

Hope that helps

Heat it up with a lighter and just pull the tip guide of with a glove as above.
The ferrule will be more difficult and may need slightly more heat to soften the glue, make sure the ferrule is not pinned in the sidewall ?
You will need to centre pop it and drill it out you need a steady hand wrap masking tape around the ferrule just in case you slip with the drill bit and mark the ferrule.

Regarding the tip set the best way is for you to place the guides on the opposite side to the set.
You can remove the set with heat but I can guarantee the rod spine will have moved from its original placement.

Tip top removal, cigarette lighter and glove, very simple , dont over complicate the matter, dont attacht the tip top to anything as you may end up somehow busting the tip.. Dont scorch the tip top to high hell either, youll charr the cane underneath and cause it to be brittle... Its a simple job

Ferrule trouble, try long gentle heat, you may wish to re use the ferrule? Use rubber glove to get grip on easing it off, keep constant pull pressure, old innertubes work wonders wrapped around ferrule if no rubber gloves are handy.
Gary make a good point on placing guides 180degrees to the set angle, remember to mark where you need to be!
Good luck

Use a methylated spirit burner to apply heat, it allows more control plus it stands up by itself. Use leather gardening gloves (tool station for a cheap pair). I got my spirit burner from a medical supplies outlet on ebay.
