Default Self Build Split Cane Rod Kits

Hi there,

I am hoping to have a go at building a split cane trout rod this autumn and was hoping someone could recommend a good supplier of self build rod kits.

Grateful for any advice....

Cheers

i'm not aware of anyone that supplies kits but if you give Chapmans a ring I'm sure they'll help you: R Chapman & Co - Split Cane Blanks by British Craftsmen

Good blanks and helpful.

Try Norman Agutters Norman Agutters Built Cane and Split Bamboo Rod Building Kits.

I haven't tried them myself, but they've always looked interesting

regards,

Doc

Thanks for the responses - Norman Agutter link looks interesting. Think I'll start with something 7ft (ish) 3 to 4 wt to suit my local streams. Hope that I'm not biting of more than I can chew mind......

I'd stay well clear of Agutters kitsoor quality ferrules, poor quality reel seats, nasty thick nylon whipping threads, doubtful quality blanks. Yes I have used them twice. The ferrules are very badly made.
Go to Chapmans, they will supply wonderful REC ferrules and reel seats, they supply very good rod rings, the blanks are superb. Get real silk whipping thread from pipers silk. Ask Chapmans to impregnate your blank. There would be a bit of difference in the price, but a huge difference in the quality of the finished rod.

To be honest - I have now googled norman agutter and this has produced some very mixed reviews. There also appears to be a lot of praise of Chapmans out there......

Decisions, Decisions! More internet research required I think....

Thanks again for the advice and opinions -very welcome as I am venturing into the unknown with this one.......

Hi John

Yes Chapman’s do some nice quality stuff (highly recommended)

Regarding blanks I am now in the position to offer blanks at very competitive prices these are not imports but made in the UK by me. Bespoke blanks made to order please contact me if you’re interested.

Gary BoBlanks (made up or as kits) has been a common topic on the SpeyPages web board. Can you make rods/kits in the 12 foot range? Right now, to my knowledge, there's only one doing same (there may well be more, but it's a well kept secret).
