Default Anyone tried a dan craft Sig V G5?

I like the sound of these blanks - true to AFTMA rating, fast recovery, deeper flexing medium fast with both finesse up close and power for distance ... if they live up to the hype.

Before buying blind, anyone out there tried one and have an opinion on pros/cons/better alternatives?

I'm thinking 9'-9'6 #5 river all rounder. I currently use a scott S4 when I want longer than is good with fibreglass.

thanks
Mark

I thought someone would jump in and answer this better then i can because i handled the rod briefly... I have had three of the regular SIG V's 8,6 #3 9 ft #5 9,6ft #6, i found them weird bending stiffer tip and slower mid section, not that great for distance and a bit of swingweight.. Liked the FTL's much better, more balanced, true medium rods that are very under rated if you ask me. I think it is the colour of the blank, thats what kept me from building one, the 9 four i casted a while back was an amazing roll casting rod.. I found the recovery on the original SIG V's just ok. Now i handled the G5, the 9,6 #4, and although i liked it a lot better it still wasn't my rod, it was nice and light though. The casting improved a lot due to the lighter tip and the overal swingweight was better then the original, now i don't know what these blanks sell for but there are a lot of good blanks out there. Like i said i haven't tried to play around with lines nor have i put any effort in because it was not my rod.. The fit and finish are like all of Dan's blanks top notch, maybe ask Mr Parks of atomsix rods he probably knows more then me about them..

I hope i helped, think not, but i tried though..

Jerry

This may not be of much help because it does not relate specifically to the Sig V G5, but I was speaking to a rod builder a year or so ago who was building on Dan Craft blanks at that time, and he reckoned they were under-rated (ie a Dan Craft five weight was in fact a six). On this basis, he built his six weights on blanks which Dan Craft rated as five-weights, and his five-weights on Dan Craft's four-weight blanks, and so on.

Hi Tan, I've had a SigV for nearly two years now and they are fantastic rod blanks.

I got mine through Steve Parkes at atomsix, who is a really sound guy.

At the time Steve was pushing out the fast FT's and some Harrison's that customers had requested.

I was blown away by the SigV for feel in the tip, but very powerful, lower into the butt section.

I have the 9ft 6in #6 but will easily handle the #7 too, even with the Airflo Rangefinder line in a #7 with it's huge 65ft head. Awesome.

I hope this helps

Best regards

Stuart

Sorry, i forgot, but i have found them very true to their given line weights i can't imagine overlining such a rod.. A friend of mine from Germany used to distribute them for Germany so i casted almost all the older SIG V, FTL's and FT's.. Now Saxony took over the brand for Germany so don't have a contact for them any more, i would love to try outhis newest series of blanks..

Hi Mark

I have a couple of the Sig V G5 blanks in stock. They are not like the FT's requiring over-lining which I think Angus is talking about. If anything they are slightly the other way. Buttery smooth and lots of power.

Very much a mid action blank. If it means anything to you the AA is around 60 degrees. The 2 I have are both labelled as 6wts however based on the ERN numbers I'd use a 5wt line on them.

PM or email me if you'd like to know more.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

That sounds very different to the Sig 5's. I have (I'm pretty sure) Sig 5 8'9" 4 wt 3 pc matte (sanded) which I've had for a few years. It would be an AA high 60's and ERN of 4.8-5.2 by my hand. I fish it with a 5 if I'm fishing close and a 4 if I am fishing a little longer. The G5's seem like they are a lot softer and a little less powerful than the original sig 5's.

I should note that I love mine. It is super crisp and throws some of the tightest loops for me of any of my rods. I did mine with tiny recoils, high end cork, and an aluminum REC so it is super light and looks pretty good too. Awesome rod.

Thanks,
Rick

CBF, I don't buy the 'oversize guides for shooting' case - pointless weight unless you have leader knots or heads that need to go through in regular use. I have some old fibremonster roads with peewee rings and not enough of them that shoot into the next paddock if you hit the timing sweet spot

I had 1/0 light snake recoils or snake brand universal 1/0 in mind for this one in the top two sections. What did you go with?
