Default Winston Boron IIIx 9ft #5

Well i finished this rod up a couple of weeks ago so it has been fished with for a couple of times..
First of all the seat, i used my last Shamburg covered thread titanium reelseat, i thought this blank deserved it. The guides are (stripper) Fuji CLSG and the running guides and tip top are REC single footed recoils.. The windingcheck is a REC with diamond knurl on it, it was actually going to be used in combination with a matching NSGX REC seat, which i thought looked to bulky on this rod..

I wasn't really sure which spacer to use on the Shamburg (right) seat, but in the end i went with the dark amboyna..

Ever since i casted this rod as the factory build back in the shop i was thinking about building it.. The strange thing about this Winston is that it doesn't really feel like one, i mean, it does, but i can see people that didn't like the (old) other winstons, love this one..
It casts like a fast rod but fishes like a soft one, it is just so easy to load up close but when you want distance the rod just changes into something else. The way this rod reaches down to the more powerfull lower sections is just so smooth there is absolutley no dead spot until you run out of rod.. This maybe one of my better switch casting rods i have tried, another novelty is that this Winston is a bit line picky, i tried a couple but found it best matched with a old Sage performance taper.. Which on its own is pretty strange because i didn't like that line on any other rod..

Well i won't bore you guys with further praise for this rod, just go out and try one when you have the chance..

thanks for looking,

Jerry

Yet another beautiful build Jerry. Do the blanks come with "Boron 111X 9' #5" already on or is that your handywork ? I just got my first 'soft' Winnie (a DL4), can't decide whether It's a keeper or not yet

I wish it was my handy work fc, i only know a couple of builders who can write like that on blanks, but to answer your question it is a decal..

Which DL4 did you get?? Those are proper Winstons quite similar to the new IIt's in flex pattern but without the fast recovery..

DL4 8'6" #4, It needs timing to perfection to get a nicely unfurling loop , but when you do I've not seen a line lay down so gently

Haven't too many to try Jerry, but have had a Sylk in a 4 and 5, a Rio Gold in a 4 and a Greys Platinum in a 4 and a Peach444 in a 4 and 5 - So far the Grey's is winning . I see this at half price, think I'll order one in a 4 http://www.sportfish.co.uk/product/m...oating-flyline

Ok, but before you give up on the rod you also have to try something with a little delicate taper, i'm surprised the sylk wasn't doing it.. Did you try the WF or DT sylk on it?? I had a couple of DL4's and apart from the nine five they all worked best with delicate flylines.. I actually loved the DL's the nione five was the first new Winston rod i bought... Seems like ages ago now but i remember linedd with an SA Ultra wf5 it rocked, especially doing rolls and switch casts.. Maybe somebody has one of the more delicate longer tip lines for you to try out..

Sylk's were WF's Jerry. Will string it up with the 4 again now and have another go. thanks, Tim. Well just had a try with the Sylk WF4 and it feels perfect. I think i might have possibly tried the 5 twice on it before !!!! Thanks Jerry
