Default Wire for Snakes

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase suitable wire that can be used to make snake guides? I'm into cane rod making and would like to try my hand at the simple task of 'Twisting' my own guides.
Thanks,
Rod.

Hi Rod, there used to be a member on here called fut sheelin, Simon.
Sadly he left, but he did a very good SBS on making them, it looked a doddle.
Not sure if his posts were kept, might be worth a search.
Best Steven.

Hi Rod

The instructions in 'Best of Planing Form' refer to 'music wire'. I've also seen piano wire mentioned elsewhere. Two sizes 0.024" and 0.029" . You could possibly use stainless steel wire as used for spinners:

McHardys of Carlisle Angling for all of your Game Fishing and Fly-tying Tackle, Bait and Clothing. Cumbria, North West, UK.

or perhaps find something from these people:

WIRES.CO.UK FISHING & FLY-TYING WIRES

It might be worth contacting Golden Witch Technologies, Golden Witch Fly Fishing they do all sorts of tools etc for making cane rods, they also make a comprehensive range of eyes.

You guys are the tops!! I have just ordered some 'Shaft Wire' from McHardy of Carlisle in .024" and .028". Piano wire may have rusted and tungsten seemed a bit over the top and pricy.
As a result of your input I have also found some agate, thank you.
Rod.

If you're making agate rings Rod, the March 2009 edition of the Italian Bamboo Rodmakers Journal has a couple of articles on making agate rings.

Titolo pagina

Excellent magazine if you haven't come across it before.

Watch out - Stainless is very soft indeed and quite unsuitable - and at 60p per for a good one from Hopkins and Holloway - why reinvent the wheel at vast expense ?

But what do I know ??

Good Luck and happy flyline wear
