Default Surface scratches

Hi guys,I've just been sorting and cleaning my rods and I've noticed that some of them have surface scratches in the varnish.Does anybody know how to repair them.I was wondering if I could just rub them out like a scratch on a car .

Not an expert here by any means but I suspect using any abrasive type of material would only make the problem worse. First just try a little bit of auto paste wax and see if that does the trick.

It doesn't Fred I tried it on my T&T last week, used the crayon as well, but it just rubs straight off again.
I don't suppose there is a quick fix, but I hope I'm wrong, and somebody tells me different.

Nuts, I was hoping for a simple fix short of a thinned down bit of rod varnish (same as you'd use on thread wraps).

Bummer, sounds like we need a rod builder to chime in here.

I know David Norwich does a full strip and revarnish job, but I bet it aint cheap.
I'll ask a good rod builder I know, Dutchy.

Most production rods are finished with a 2-part finish, paint or varnish. If it is just a scratch in the varnish, or in the paint without going throught to the blank, seymo do a one-part varnish you can just wipe on. Wouldn't do for ferrules but fine elsewhere. Or any yatch varnish.

For a scratch that goes through paint you might fill the scratch with paint, remove excess then wipe on a few varnish coats (test colour fastness first). An exact match would be tricky.

Be very carefull touching rods up you could end up with the rod looking worse than before you started.
The coating is put on in one go so you dont get an edge.
If you have ever tried touching up your car paint work you will know what I mean.
If its not to bad leave it

If its a cane rod and down to the woodwork - get something on it quick to stop any chance of wet penetration bu..ering the adhesive .

On carbons and glasses - scratches are just about cosmetics - leave it alone unless you want to do a full strip and revarnish job .

And the lads are right - very difficult to touch up and get near the finish original back .

Best wishes
