Default epoxy rod scratch repair male section help

Hi All,

Got a rod where the male section is heavily scratched. I have heard rod companies lazer polish these sections in order to achieve a perfect fit. how do i get the rod epoxy i use on my whipping threads to look feel or fix the grooves on the male graphite section. or should i be using some other kind of glue?, i have used super glue but after it drys it turns to sand paper finish and is certainly not smooth and doesnt really fill in any grooves. The grooves scratches i am talking about are like 0.5mm but into the carbon itself....oh boy. Bascially came from somone using the rod and then getting sand inside and couldnt bother cleaning it.

Anyone with some experiance please post up. The rod i am trying to fix is an expensive wand and not one i want to mess up ... more than it is already...

Default Don't

DO NOT DO THIS.YOUR IDEA IS VERY FLAWED.AND WILL LIKELY RUIN YOUR ROD.
You can buy a carbon spray designed for this purpose.

Default ok

ok tx for the advice however i need something a bit more permanent than spray.

the scratches on the male part will eat into the other carbon section each time i put the rod up not to mention what damage it will do when casting / landing a fish.

addmittadly the spay you suggested i dont know much about = are u suggesting it hardens?

update ok just read maver carbon spray hardens but how to i polish it round again? to fit back in the female section. I got vernia measuring tool but am thinking i will never ever get it totally round?

Can I ask how the spigot got so badly scratched.

The spray is designed for this purpose ,It is not hard(solid) and does need to respraying..but everything you have mentioned is a disaster for your rod.
If you don't want to do this.I suggest you contact David Norwich on here.He should know how to professionally help you. Before you do irrepairable damage.

You can use thin polyurethane for ferrules assuming it is a gloss blank. It takes time to get just the right fit, but it works great. I used to use U-40 permagloss, but others work as well. You need to clean the ferrule first and give it a solvent wipe (ethanol or IPA) and let it dry. Then wipe on a thin coat of polyurethane and wipe it back off. It will leave a very thin coating on the rod. Once dry, repeat. You'll do this for a few coats (3-5, depending on the fit) until you're somewhat close. You can check how close you are after a coat is dried by fitting the sections snugly, but not tight. If you are too tight, you can take some extra fine sandpaper (600 grit wet dry for me) or a green scotchbrite industrial scrubbie to take a little of the urethane back off. With patience, you'll get an exact fit that will wear like iron and blend perfectly with the original finish.

This is also useful for cheaper blanks that don't have great fit to start with. The Forecast blanks are notorious for this and need to be trimmed and 'shimmed'.

Thanks
Rick

Default Carbon spray think is best easy option

Ok well going to try some of that carbon spray. If anyone can suggest a good brand please let me? I was going for maver guess 2k poles need more tlc than a fly rod. How did happen? I figure sand got inside the female furual and the guy before me pushed sections together anyway either that or sections where very loose from casting and he hooked a trout and leverage did the damage. Either way scratches are deep and expoxy is coming away from the carbon. So maybe I should go the polyetene varnish route?

It's worth a try with the spray 1st.Possibly several very thin coats.

Default spray it is then

spray it is then,

I figure it will fill in the bigger scratches hopefully. once you get the repair how it should look do i then sand paper the "spray graphite" to get a mirror finish thinking 600grain sandpaper here or just leave it alone?

After that, than do i then need to put that u-40stuff over the top to seal it? =If anyone knows a uk supplier let me know google just finds usa ones.

Lastly anyone know what i do about the female section i know thats gotta be as badly damaged as well but you cannt see inside? Probably thinking the impossible here but you never know =someone else might?

Finally tx for the all the help to all who have posted.
