Default Fixing Rod Tip Advice

Hi everyone,

The tip of my rod is missing the ceramic or plastic bit which protects the line and allows it to run smoothly through the guide (I don't know the technical term!) Please see the attached picture for comparison or missing vs complete.

I don't really want to do all the work or replacing the whole guide so thought about covering the metal of the tip guide with a thin layer of epoxy. Maybe varnished afterwards to reduce friction?

I'm not sure how well this would work - any advice would be welcome.

Jon,
It's only a few minutes work to remove the tip top and replacing it with a new one.
They are held in place with hot melt glue or sometimes with epoxy.
Put a paper clip in a vice and link to the tip top to be removed with a piece of elastic band.
Gently warm the tip top tube whilst gently pulling the rod away from the vice and you'll be amazed at just how easy they come off, get a mate to help if you want.
Replacing it is just a case of buying a new tip top and refitting it with some hot melt glue, and you can finish it off with a small trim wrap if you want to.

When you get the tip ring off send it to H&H and ask for a replacement.
You dont even need to measure it
then just glue the new tip ring on lining up the tip guide with the other rings on the rod.

Thanks for the quick replies Gary and TC!

What do I do about the thread wraps around the tip guide? Won't they still hold the tip in place even with the glue melted?

How do I get that off?

Also do I need to wrap it with something when putting the new tip on?

Sorry for being so green on all this. Your help's much appreciated!

Jon

Hi very carefully slice down the tread with a sharp blade then pull the wraps of the blank.
Whip some correct colour thread to match the original and 6 coats of standard varnish finishes the job.
Don’t bother with epoxy it not worth it for one tip ring.

Good luck mate

Jon,

The thread on a tip top is purely cosmetic. I wouldn't even take it off until you have the new tip top in hand. Pull off the old and then dry fit the new. If the tip top is close enough to the thread, leave it in place. Then you dont' even have to wrap anything. Just unglue, reglue, and be done.

Thanks
Rick

Hi yes you may be able to leave the thread on the rod at the tip ring.
sometimes the thread goes slightly over the end of the tube I cannot make it out from your picture.
So try to just pull it off and leave the thread were it is first.

Its not difficult I am sure you will be ok either way.
