Default Threadless guides HELP NEEDED

i am currently due to start a new rod build. components ordered, just waiting on delivery.

i have recently seen a few fly rods which appear to have guides that are not whipped in place.

i quite like the look and wondered whether epoxy alone would be strong enough without having to whip the guides in place.

i have seen on USA forums, rod builders using bugbond but it seems that proplonged exposure to UV would make this brittle.

all advice welcome.

kind regards

Don't you try it ! It's performance you want - looks are irrelevant - well, to real fishermen !

Be cautious about any new ideas - it's usually the Marketing Department at work again -

Best I ever saw was an attempt by DAM in the 70's to set rings with shrink tubing - shame they all fell out after a coupla months and about busted them - Gawd , the Marketing Manager's feet didn't touch shortly after !

Beware of Freaks Bearing Gifts !

FI,

The invisible wraps are done with white silk thread and polyurethane finishes. They are pretty easy to do. You are useing very fine silk thread that goes completely clear on the blank. The urethane seems to work better than expoxy. Not sure where you'd get either in this country, but I bet they are available. The main thing is keeping the thread clean and oil free. Dirt will kill the invisible look and oil on your hands will make splotches. Cotton gloves help when wrapping.

Thanks,
Rick

Why would using Bugbond be a problem?

i have seen some reports on some of the USA rod buidling forums where builders have used bugbond. As bugbond is cured by exposing it to UV, some people believe that over time it will become brittle as it would be exposed for long periods of time during fishing activities.

i think i am going to stick with the old whipping and epoxy coating.

Kind Regards

Ok.
So no fact just what some people believe.
I have seen a rod built with BugBond and that has had fish to 15lb on it and its as good as gold.
Of course it is still early days but BugBond is a very stable material.
There is an experiment at the moment with a surfcandy that has been left in direct sunlight for over 18 months with no weakening or discolouration at all.
Can the same be said for a candy made from Epoxy?
