finishing rod- wraps or whole rod

I'm about to start my first build and have a probably very naive question:

when it comes to finishing the rod do I do the whole rod or just the snake ring wrappings? I'm finishing with flex coat low build

Rings only and take it on to the blank a couple of millimetres on either side of the thread. Mudhole have some great Youtube guides for this. Good luck.
