Default Comparing blanks to manufactured rod

heya guys

For some reason today i started thinking about building my own rod. I have spent all day reading threads on here and watching videos on youtube and have decided it is the way to go! I have been looking at the different kinds of blanks available and wondered if there was any comparison guide or if someone could let me know what the various blanks equate to/are comparable to in terms of rods currently on the market in terms of action and feel. For example what rod would a harrison 9ft 6" 4 piece blank or a Pac Bay Rainforest II blank be comparable to? I have a sonik sk8 9ft #5 that i love and would to have a blank with a similar action/feel that i could build my own rod from........

thanks

lee

I can't answer your question about Harrison or Pac Bay blanks, Lee but 'Guides and Blanks' sell blanks from Hardy, Sage, St Croix, CTS, Scott as well as Harrison: Fly Blanks - Rod Blanks

If there was a rod from one of these makers you liked I think they would probably be able to get you a blank.

The models listed on the website are fairly limited but I would think that G&Bs would be able to obtain any models from these manufacturers. In the past they have supplied me with blanks not listed on their website.

Always worth a call to Sonik to see if they would sell you a blank.

I've started building my own rod and have found it interesting as you can make the rod the way you want, you can see my rod in progress a bit further down the section, as for getting a blank to match a rod, apart from sage and other manufacturers who do blanks don't think you'll have much luck as brand I think will tend to make blanks namelessly and en mass in china and then brand them with their own stickers,

Hopkins and holloway are helpful as well as the others who should be on here, bbamboo and crane valley have helped me, search for a guy topconker who has his rod building first go photographed from start to finish

Is this true, i emailed Scott numerous times but they don't sell blanks anymore..

It is tricky to find a blank that has the same feel as the sonik rod you are talking about.. But there are a lot of experianced builders on here who can help you find something suitable..

I build on loads of blanks high middle and low end stuff.. There are lots of good blanks in all those, a lot of bad too.
DanCraft is always a good choise (ask Atomsix) his FTL range won't brake the bank and are amazing river rods with loads of feel..
The rainforest two range is not really my thing but lots of people seem to like them.. If you specify what kind of rod you are looking for maybe some of the people on here can help you out..

Good for you to start building your own, but be carefull this stuff is pretty addictive..

Just had another look at this link and the Scott blanks are shown as being 'out of stock' so you may well be right.
