Question Primitive/ rustic Nets ?

Hi Guys

The old fella was talking about making a net, not a fancy bamboo sort just simple basic net from hazel, Ash, Willow ? or the like.......

Got me thinking ............had a wonder locally only straight wood i could find was Alder but im think hazel would probably be best.

Simply bent this Alder sappling around a jig and dried it fast on a radiator, when i took it off it stayed in perfect shape, ive put a off cut on the handle and plan to simple whip some rope over them to make a usable handle.

This was just a "dry run" to see if it was possible now im looking for the right wood to try and make a nicer one, cheap, simple, rustic but effective ...........

I'd be interested to hear from others who have had a go at this type of net re wood types etc

I really like the look of that !

A different approach to Building your own net. (go to the end of the post) He used Hazel, choosing a 'Y' shaped bough but this means putting lashings on the "legs" whereas yours is free of lashings on the frame.

I wonder if adapting the handle idea shown in the post above, might be worth a try....just need to make it a bit 'rustic' LOL. Having said that, it would be covered with a whipping so it probably wouldn't even be seen ????

HERES A NET I MADE DURING LAST YEAR
Click the image to open in full size.
MADE IT OUT OFF WHITE OAK WITH A PINE INSERT AND MAHOGANY HANDLE
HEAT BENT THE WOOD TO ROUGH SHAPE, THEN GLUED THE STIPES TOGETHER AND CLAMPING THEN SHUT ALSO WITH STRING UNTILL SET, SHAPED THE HANDLE THEN FINALY GLUED THAT UP,GAVE 3 COATS OF EXTERNAL VARNISH, BOUGHT MESH NET AND COUNTED HOW MANY HOOPS WERE THERE THEN DRILLED HOLES USED BRAID TO THREAD ON THE NET,
ITS NOT PERFECT BUT FOR A FIRST ATTEMPT IS NOT BAD. CHEERS B

nice one chaps hazel is a great wood to play with, would love to do but no woods in middle of the town i live. sure think our ancesters made them too. What about a hazel fly rod nice 7ft 6in wand might put those over priced rods to shame. flyfishy
