Default Where can I purchase.........

......... A threaded 60 deg. tip to fit the end of my depth guage ? Also a 4.5ft. 650 watt Mica heating element for the oven I want to make A La Wayne Cattanach? Is it realistic to suppose I can find a Mica element in this country or am I reduced to making a 'Hot Air Gun' type oven?
I would be greatful for all the help I can get on this topic.
Thanks'
Rod.

Hi Rod
Welcome to the world of bamboo rod making

check out the link.

Depth Gauge and contact point....

Regarding a micro strip heater sorry cannot help you there.
From what I have read about them to be heat efficient you may have to fit a fan to avoid cold pockets forming.
It begs the question why bother with the trouble or expense simply flame the bamboo or make a hot air gun oven which is simple to construct and cheep.
Or you could make spliced rods and heat treat in your domestic oven.

Many of the top rod makers both here and in the US do not possess any oven so think about it first.
I think you are going into way to much trouble just to heat treat bamboo.

loads of stuff on the net like this

I looked into building a mica-strip oven but struggled to find anything suitable or that I could understand! I eventually settled for making a hot air gun model used horizontally.

It was interesting to see the comments of Larry Swearingen in the link posted by Gary. The temperature variations he quotes are very similar to my own oven (roughly 10 degrees difference end to end), not very precise but it does the job if you swap the blanks end for end half way through the process.

If it's of any interest I can post a few pics.

Pete

Hi Pete

Wrap some more insulation at bottom end that will even it out.
Or do what I did make a box for the bottom end a fill the box with sand totally fire proof
Its worth pointing out even a top of the range domestic fan oven will have a temp difference from the top to the bottom
test it if you have one.

Cheers
Gary

Thanks for all your help folks, your responce is enough to warm the worst winter. I should add that it is a 60deg. tip for a Dial Gaugethat I require.
Were I now to build a hot air oven, is there any way I can wire this to a thermostat in order to more closely set the temperature?
Thanks again,
Rod.

No I don’t think so but really there is no need, you control the temp by the amount of insulation and the adjustment of the hotair gun plus the opening or closing of the outlet pipe.
Heat it up for 20 minutes and check the temperature with a probe thermometer inserted at the top and bottom via two holes put through the ducting.
After a few tests you will get a feel for it.

There is a load of rubbish put forward about stringent times and temperatures every one will have different opinions on what works. Ask a hundred rod makers and each will give you different times and temperatures some will say 30 minutes at this temperature other will say 15 minutes at that temperature.
The important point about heat treatment of the bamboo is that you do it
Or at least some form of it.
DON’T WORRY ABOUT VERY SMALL DIFFRENCES

Some great old rods were heat treated with nothing more than a paraffin blowtorch still out there catching fish after 60 yrs of constant use
SO KEEP IT SIMPLE
