Default How to fit a new handle

Hi i'm after some advice on how to fit a new handle to a greys streamflex 10ft. The handle on the rod appears to be made of cork rings. Do i cut those off and slide new rings from the top of the rod section down or do i remove the reel seat?

Jonathan

Well yes, but you do have to remove the cap of the seat otherwise you will have to turn the blank from the front in the lathe and thats asking for problems. Also is there a winding check on the rod??? The decal section is also a bit of a problem. You might be better of, reversing the whole process.

Hi Jerry

What do you mean by winding check? There are no line guides on the bottom section if that is what you mean?

A winding Check is a little ring between the cork and the first thread wrap (usually hook keeper)..

I have to replace three fly rod handles for customers if you want i can email or PM you som pics of the whole process..

Purchase whole cork handle or rings from Siesta cork and tile or Steve Parton on here.Make sure the cork at the top of the blank, if it's rings you're using, are of the best quality, as this is where all the thumb pressure is exerted on the blank. Also, make sure your taper fit, rings to blank is excellent. If there's any play between handle and the blank deformation occurs which results in cork cracking over time.
Talk to Steve on here and David Norwich. Also, any of the custom builders in the bamboo section of the forum. Some are world class builders of fly rods.
