SB...... It's waaaaay too late my friend. Took Cothi out there for a looksee, the river was still the colour of cheap layby tea but the valley cast its intoxicating spell

BTW Up at Longtown the river was fining down. My guess is that it will be fishable tomorrow so long as there is no more rain tonight. Pandy is still about 18" up and Kentchurch/Skenfrith about 2ft. Cothi spotted a nice yellow May though - stood out nicely against the chocolate water.

ANyone planning to get out on saturday?

I may fish this weekend but I can guarantee it won't be on a river. If it stops raining there would be an outside chance of getting on the middle Elwy and finding a sewin but the forcast is rubbish for the rest of the week and we're going to get more water. I feel sorry for Cothi, coming all that way and not being able to sample the real delights of the river.

I've got two more Monnow virgins coming to fish with me at Tregate in June so I've only got myself to blame really. I just hope that the water will have finally run off by then. We're probably also going to have a look at the Troddi and maybe try for a shad as well although it will be getting a bit late for them.

Let's hope that the rain will finally stop before too long and we can get back to the business of taking on the trout.

Incidentally, I see from the Prince Albert mag that all the owners/tenants on the Hodder are embarking on a programme of dye marking brown trout stockies, they are of course four years behind the Monnow but it will be interesting to compare results.

Default Good news, for the moment...

The Dore was coloured but fishable at Vowchurch this morning. Fish were rising above the bridge and the odd may was seen coming off.

The Honddu is high and coloured.

The Monnow at Longtown is coloured but fishable.

The Olchon is high but reasonably clear.

All parts of your anatomy crossed, please, that we do not have much more rain and some fishing might be possible this weekend, if not before.

Day tickets on these upper waters are available, for details see www.monnow.org.uk

Good stuff CF, I note that there is a Monnow beat right up at Craswall - perhaps more of a bedrock stream up there? - any idea of the fishing quality?

Spy1, The Wylye is a little out of my neck of the woods but based on my limited experience of the valley, I would say that it should be very fishable this weekend. Drop Cothi a PM - he was on it today so will have a much better idea. Hope it is fishable - if so, I can see you filling your boots - so to speak.

.
I fished at Craswall many years ago when Birmingham AA had a stretch there. It was a bedrock stream, fairly high up the valley and had a lot of fairly small trout. I'm not sure that there will be much may as there was not a great deal of fine gravel or silt.

Mayflies would be a bonus - the words: "a lot of fairly small trout" are good enough for me

Tigermoth,

I have not fished this stretch but, having looked at the map, it is likely to be a reasonable sized stream. As to the substrate, I know not. Perhaps we should take a weekend to explore the day ticket waters on the list, together with the pubs along the way?

My memory is of a fairly small stream and very shallow in places - but it was a long time ago. The OS Map shows it as smaller than the Escely Brook at Michaelchurch in the next valley, it doesn't warrant a double line.
