Default Auction V 2011 Lot 35: One Day One Rod Wellow Brook

Kindly donated by D Wiltshire Esq...

Dave's fly tying skills are legendary on this board, but if there's one thing he does better than tie... it is in presenting his offerings to the wily trout of rivers and streams across the country.

The little river Wellow is one of Southern England hidden gems. A limestone stream flowing through the beautiful meadowland of northern Somerset. A day in the company of Dave will help you hone your small stream skills and introduce you to some fine fishing.

Well after a quiet winter, full of anticipation, I managed to get out today

and what a day it Was. I left home in West London, for the 120 mile drive to

Bath, in light rain, turning heavy then very heavy until I passed Swindon on

the M4. But as I neared Bath the sun came out and the rain did not return

until I left Bath on the way home.

I met up with Dave Wiltshire outside the Fox and Badger and we headed for the

river. From the bridge by the car park we could see several fish rising, so

quickly I set up my 6'2# Orvis Helios, floating line and a small Klinkhamer.

My rusty casting and clumsy wading didn't help so after ten minutes we left

them and moved further down stream to fish several beats that Dave knows well.

It was not an easy day, tight casts, overhanging branches waiting for a stray

cast. Several fish were rising sporadic hatches of buzzers, later large dark

olives were hatching and drifting untouched down stream. We spent most of the

day on the dry, mostly casting to rising fish. After creeping under fallen

trees on my hands and knees, keeping as low as my aging knees allowed, I

managed to hook into two lively brownies but they shook the hook easily. This

shows the skills needed to fish these small streams, these fish don't mess

about when hooked. I eventualy got one to stick, again after crawling into

position and casting into the foam line it took a LDO pattern that Dave had tied on

for me.

Dave is very knowledgeable, and extremely patient, he put me in the right spots

, pointing out likely lies, a real pleasure to be with and he made sure I had

a great day out, well worth the trip

I do have to appologise to Dave as he spent a good part of the day retreiving

my flies from overhanging bushes and trees, without complaining once, even

when I put them in the same bush several times.

So if you are looking to try some small stream fishing give Dave a call, you

won't regret it.

Michael
