No More Broken Fly Rods with Fly Rod Saver

A simple but very effective solution to avoiding broken or damaged fly rods A simple but very effective solution to avoiding broken or damaged fly rods

We've all put our fly rod down on the ground or leant it against something only to watch it fall over anyway. How many of you have stepped on your rod and broken it or at least had a near miss or scratched it on rocks perhaps? The new Fly Rod Saver is a great solution to these problems.

By FlyRodSaver.com

You’ve probably invested a considerable amount of money in your fly rod and reel, which is why you’ll find Fly Rod Saver an invaluable piece of equipment. Rather than laying your rod on the ground where it can easily be broken, Fly Rod Saver will keep your expensive fly rod upright and safe from clumsy feet, as well as preventing dirt and stones from scratching your rod’s finish and damaging your reel.

Most of us like to travel light when fishing but this device weighs under 2 ounces so you won't even know you're carrying it. Tackling up is made easier as it frees up both hands and it's perfect for people who like to carry two rods. Fish with one, while the other stays safe and ready to use.

The product is made of high density polypropylene and will withstand many years of use in the field. The clip has been designed to hold your rod safe even in strong winds and the spike will penetrate most surfaces. Using the device couldn’t be easier. Simply place the butt of your rod into the bowl and place the rod handle against the clip opening, gently but firmly rotate the rod as you push the rod into place.

Click on the Play button to below to watch a short video clip of the Fly Rod Saver in action.

As far as I'm concerned it doesn't make sense to place valuable fly fishing gear on the ground, it's all too easy to step on your rod and snap the tip. That's exactly what happened to me and what led to me coming up with the idea for Fly Rod Saver.

It was back in 1999 I was fishing on the River Test in the UK, and I put my fly rod on the ground while selecting a fly. Like a fool I stepped back and heard a crack. I’d snapped the tip off my rod, worse than that was I didn’t have a spare rod with me and so I had to drive home (over 3 hours away) and my long awaited fishing trip was ruined.

It was on this drive home that I thought what if you could get a bank stand? Seemed obvious but nothing was available. But like most of us when we come up with an idea for a new product or invention, the idea stayed in my head. Five years later I went on a fishing trip with my 3 sons. We were camping near Gisborne in New Zealand and were fishing the Waioeke River. This time I brought a few spare rods. We camped in a really remote spot but there were bullocks in an adjoining field. Our tents were placed close to the fence, so we could dry clothes. In New Zealand people tend to wade in boots and shorts in summer, rather than waders. On the first night after fishing all day I was looking for a place to put my rod. The fence seemed the obvious place and I leaned my rod against the wire. Unaware that the wire was carrying an electric current to keep the bullocks in check. Well as I was wearing boots full of water from wading in the river, the electric shock was horrendous. My sons thought it was hilarious as I did the dance of fear, shrieking with pain. Once again I thought of my idea for a fly rod bank stand, but did nothing with it until 2010 when I promised myself I would get it into production no matter what.

Coming up with ideas is the easy part! Getting a product made and into production is much harder than I thought. Still I'm very pleased with how its turned out and I know that people who use Fly Rod Saver regard it as a invaluable piece of kit. Funny thing is, many of the people who have bought the device have admitted to stepping on and damaging their fly rods. It's a bit like backing up the data on your computer. Most of us don't do it but once you've lost important files, you become a back up fanatic.

So don't wait until you break your favourite rod, protect your fly rod and reel with Fly Rod Saver.

I think I might be ordering a couple of these - brilliantly simple idea! : No More Broken Fly Rods with Fly Rod Saver Cracking idea, but at $28 I think I might just make my own from a few bits and bobs... I've an idea to use a rubber O ring with a pull tab from an old bike pump mount to avoid the clip wearing the cork (I thought that too when I saw the video). May not be as light though :(

So they're much the same as this then 220777164760, £2.50 on ebay. I usually take a bankstick with me to rest the spare rod on.

Hi all, thank you for the comments on my product. The clip will not damage the cork handle as it can be adjusted to fit your rod. It also has rounded ends to avoid marking the cork. I appreciate it's not for everyone, but I'm a bit anal about keeping my gear clean and free of scratches. As for price at $19 each, it's comparable to a lot of other gear out there. If anyone wants to test the device, I can send a couple out to forum members in exchange for an honest review, is that fair? Many thanks to all. Al

Well stevesnaps, I can only assume that with a user name like yours, you can only be a rod tester and you will be testing this clever little 'gizmo' to it's limits ????? Sorry, only joking

looks like a good idea but price wise the one on e-bay has to beat it as there does not look to be a big difference in the two

Hi great idea. when i was tackling up at the land rover one day i proped the rod up against the ide of truck only for the wind to blow it over onto gravel car park.A few scratches was the result. Had a look around my garage found a suction cup type devise that is used for holding glass windows ect. It has one fixed handle and one that hinges to operate the suction cup. i cut the centre of the handles away "just wide enough to slip the rod into" in use i found it wasnt a very good suction cup and it fell of the window:omg: next idea was to remove the moving handle ,remove 1/4" bolt which left hole through the centre. onto this i attached a magnet covered it with black electrical tape. result . will add photo tomorrow.. I once saw a clamp that fitted to the gun whale of a boat also used to hold rod vertical.

Hi', Why not use a two-in-one device, like magnetic rod holder, for car roofs? Attach one to the side of the car, just below window level, and use the elastics to secure up to 6 rods at a time, if you wish. I've done that off-and-on for over 15 years. Jada. PS Many years ago, some manufacturers, Hardy, Rudge etc, used to fit their rods with butt spears. They did exactly the same job. Maybe the modern angler is adverse to carrying a little extra weight in the rod handle.

The idea of the "Fly Rod Saver" is to stand your second rod in near the waters edge which may be some distance from your car. ;)

I like the idea of these gadgets I think they would be good when night fishing, putting your spare rod down and trying to find it without standing on it in pitch dark can be a little bit tricky.

Hi', Red Rooster. I get your point, but I rarely carry two rods while fly fishing on rivers. I try to travel light. If I needed a rod rest for a second rod, I have a penknife, there are usually plenty bits of branch or twigs on the banks of our rivers, flood rubbish, and they are freebies. When the Himalayan balsam gets going, there is always that greenery available, its only useful purpose. The average fly fisher just loves to spend money on gadgets, necessary or not. Jada

Ah, maybe there IS a reason  Hi Mancfly, I respect your view, though don't agree with your comment about it being unnecessary, I understand the product is not for everyone. As for the price. I researched the market as best I could and tried to balance a desire to recoup the many thousands of $'s this has cost me so far, with a sensible price. Even so it will literally take me years to 'get my money back' as I am just a regular guy like you who loves fly fishing and not a big company. Still thank you for your comments, far better than being ignored :-)

Ah, maybe there IS a reason  It weighs next to nothing and is small enough to fit in any tackle bag,you can also hang it off your waistcoat or belt if you so wish Anyway mine showed up today so many thanks Al.I'm hoping to get out fishing at the weekend so will write up a review as soon as I've tested it for you Neil

I think its a great bit of kit, well thought out and well made. Totally necessary when you have a fishing friend like I do who's like big foot! Mine arrived yesterday and I totally agree with the above post. I planted it on the lawn in a howling wind. It stayed there for an hour with a rod inserted, no problems whatsoever. As above well made and well thought out. As for marking the handle-I don't think so, no way. I read one comment above saying it was not a necessary piece of equipment. I agree. It's hardly necessary, we've done ok so far. However, I've bought a good few quality rods over the years, 99% are as described-mint. Then I look at the plate on the end of the handle and can see some rods have been set up resting in gravel or worse, the nice shiny bit is scratched. Really takes from the rest of the rod (for me) which may well be mint. I take great care with my rods not to do that and often end up laying the rod down somewhere safe where I know it will not get scratched (risking some eegit standing on it :(). Petty perhaps but that's how I like my rods-unscratched. The rod saver solves the problem 100%. So for me, also not necessary, but a handy piece of kit that I will use often. One less thing to think about . Chris.

I tried the rod saver for the first time today,my initial thoughts were it looks and feels well made,i thought maybe the clips looked a bit thin and could get a bit stressed after continuous use.The rod holder went into the ground with ease, and after adjusting (opening)the clips to suit the rod handle it was a very snug fit,and held the rod firmly in quite a strong wind.Although i don't think i would of ever considered the need for one, after trying it out i think it is a very useful item, it weighs next to nothing and as i fish mostly with just a small bum bag that hold everything i need for my fishing,it will be clipped onto the bag strap every trip.I also have another use for it i will be adapting an old rod handle with a small tripod head to fit the camera while fishing. It will show it's true value when night fishing for sea trout, with a fluorescent strip or star stuck to it,it will be easy to locate for storing your rod safely while you wrestle with the silver monsters as quietly as possible. There was some concern that the clips might damage the cork handle on the rod that is not an issue at all, it will not.For the people worried about marking the cork handle, standing on your rod would be a lot worse, and a thing of the past with one of these.Highly recommended.
