Tubes and coneheads

Tube flies have long been popular for fishing for salmon and they have been joined recently by coneheads. But both tubes and coneheads are now becoming as popular in many countries for trout fishing as in Scandinavia. At the recent Spring Fly Fishing Show one company that was showing a very wide range of brass and polymer tubes and coneheads was the Finnish company Eumer. In addition to all the separate parts, the company manufactures vices designed for tying tube flies, as well as on hooks.

The company sells packs of 12 assorted bodies and coneheads for the home fly tier. Coneheads are available in three different sizes and 12 colours and the tubes in three different product groups with over 100 variations. Plastic tubes are available in nine colours.

The first tube flies were tied for salmon fishing back in about 1945, in Scotland. By 1951, William F Blades who was born in England but emigrated to the USA was writing about tying tube flies for trout in his book Fishing Flies and Fly Tying. The latest materials and colours available will help the creative fly tier to produce some very interesting colour combinations.
