How to tie an Ice Maiden Tube

Ice Maiden

As an alternative to the White Wing fished at dusk or when the water is very cold this fly excels. Make sure that the wing is tied not too heavily to allow the pearl Mylar body to shine through. Make sure you use good quality fine straight Bucktail, course thick Bucktail is inclined to flair out when tied in firmly rather than lay alongside the tube body.


Materials needed Tying threads White and Black Aluminium salmon tube Fl. Red floss Pearl Mylar tubing Bucktail, Fl. Yellow, Fl. Light Blue, Fl. White Pearl Krystal flash Varnish


Step 1. Cover the tube with a length of pearl Mylar tubing, tie in at the tag end with White thread then pull the tubing forwards before tying in at the head end. Apply a little superglue and allow to dry.
Step 2. Wind on turns of Fl. Red Floss to form the tag and whip finish then coat the tube with clear varnish and allow to dry
Step 3. Tie in a sparse layer of Fl. White bucktail spreading evenly around the shank.
Step 4. Tie in a sparse layer of Fl. Lemon Yellow bucktail spreading evenly around the shank.
Step 5. Tie in a sparse layer of Fl. Kingfisher Blue bucktail spreading evenly around the shank. Apply a small amount of superglue with a dubbing needle at the tie in point before adding more wraps of thread. Trim away any waste bucktail before doing a whip finish and coating the head with varnish.
