Default morning fly fans!

Hi all, I'm an all round angler who specialises in pike angling. I started out coarse fishing on canals and worked my way to river coarse fishing, carp angling and now am a pike lover. Recently started surface lure piking and I'm loving it!

My thinking has now progressed onto using my location in Yorkshire to my advantage by targeting into the crazy world of fly fishing. I'm a member of 3 local clubs who have copious amounts of trout and grayling in the rivers (pbs currently 4lb 14oz and 1lb 8oz respectively), and I want to broaden my quarry to allow me to take a new method to the banks to try on any given day. Play the method by the conditions so to speak and during my large research mission, came across this forum which I have taken a lot from and wish to delve deeper into the community as well as the information.

Hopefully noobies are welcome and I look forward to contributing my findings and sharing my results with you all.

As it's a new venture, I have been looking at some starter gear to get a feel for it and I'm looking for something around 5-7wt Shakespeare Odyssey and leeda intrepid reel setup with a wf floating line to start out as ill be fishing small rivers. Ill be taking the plunge later this month and buying a setup of this price range and heading out as soon as I can!

If this seems off the mark, please let me know! Or if you have an entry level setup kicking about you would part with for a beginner for a few quid I'd really appreciate it...

Thanks for reading my long winded intro and hope to be immersed into the fly world boobies and all
Ed

Hi edbeef welcome to the forum and keep in touch plenty of yorkshire anglers on the site; the start up package you are looking at is very good I wish something as good as that was around when I started .BTW Ed as you can see it's possible to put your location into your profile this may help with some of the help and advice you get it may turn out that you are in the same club as some of our senior members. Welcome to the Forum. If you're looking at fishing small rivers you might want to go down in size on the rod. I was fishing a small river and stream on Saturday with an Oddyssey 7'6" 4 weight and it was right on the money. Beautiful little rod which is effortless to cast and deadly accurate. It handled fish up to 45 cm so it's got the power as well. Hard to believe it only retails for 30 quid!

Take care

Terry

I have just been offered a #6 hardy swift mk1 and greys reel for an unbelievable price... Thanks for the help on weights Terry, a 6 will hopefully cover most bases - fingers crossed!

I may have to get into this fly fishing lark and get some use from it.

Going to a trout farm next weekend to learn the basics and take it from there... I'll let you know how my 1st ever trip goes!

Tried it on his driveway and seemed to get the hang of it quite quickly, just using too much force and not letting the wrist do the action. Slow it down...

That's the pike lures fault haha!

Thanks guys...
