Default Hi there

Hi all,

Im very new to fly fishing after spending a week with my brother fly fishing Threadbo River in Australia in search of fresh water trout. I am from Australia originally, but have lived in London for a number of years and have now got hooked on fly fishing!

I was hoping that you all might be able to point me in the right direction. I dont have ANY gear at all so will be looking for a decent (but rather cheap) fly rod and reel, and also want to know of any good areas I can head out of London and go fishing on the weekend.

I guess any advise regarding the gear I should be buying is first, but anything else you can help me with would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Think it would help if you said how much you have to spend on a rod etc so members can find a good rod for your budget. otherwise they might be suggesting rods that are way over your budget.
Also what type of fishing will you be doing eg stillwaters or river fishing??

Add my welcome from 8 time zones to the west. And a +1 to Nate's questions above. Nothing 'wrong' with buying good used kit and the 'savings' may well pay for a casting lesson.

With the thought of a casting lesson, maybe that should be the first thing you do. Most Instructors will have several rods/lines available for you to try (before you buy).

Thank for all the replies!!

I dont really know how much I need to spend on getting fly gear. I would have thought spending up to £300 on a rod and reel, but if this isnt enough I would love to hear the reasons for spending some more (also the reasons for spending less - afterall, I am just beginning). I realise I will also need all the other associated gear (net, bag, vest, flies, etc), but getting a rod and reel is step no. 1.

Any help very much appreciated!!

Cheers,

Mark.
