Default Hello to all

Hi guys,

Just thought i would say hello as i have finally got some time lol..

I am a newbie to fly fishing and i think i am already picking up some really bad habits because when i go up the hills in Clydebank and fish for the day my wrist is killing by the end of the day.

I would like to learn how to cast properly and utube is not helping me i have heard there is a glasgow casting club but i am unsure off how to get there so if someone could help me out that would be great as any tips is going to help my wrist from snapping off lol.

Many thanks

Graham

Hi Graham,
It's mostly still water down here in Bedfordshire, no much in the way of river fishing, certainly not for game fish. I do occasionally fish for Chub on the River Great Ouse.

I fish at at number of places Manor Farm near Biggleswade, Summerfields at Haynes and a few of the bigger waters, Ravensthorpe, Grafham and Draycote.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for that i am up the hills again tomorrow trying my luck at catching more brown trout i have to admit i love this forum and i love this sport. When the father in law told me about it and showed me i thought there is no way i can do that and through a little time i have managed to do it a little and i can only catch fish on a gold head but i truly love it. I can only cast out about 40ft and then my line collapses hence i know i am doing something wrong.

As i say i am going up tomorrow and i am going to give the dry fly a crack and change a couple of things and if i catch well i catch but if not its just great to get out in the fresh air and the views are amazing too.

Would love to get to the glasgow casting club but will have to find out more about the public transport to get there.

are you using that greys rod.it might be a little stiff on the tip. you really want a middle action to tip.it might be better for you and a 10 foot to the line is spot on.but i think your casting ok for now its not bad 40 ft you will get better.try pulling the line a bit as the rod comes foword over and just as the rod gets past your head pull the line on the last false cast.it should go a we bit more an d keep your rod up till the line starts to drop then lower the rod with the line dont lower the rod first and pull the line to the water .it slows the line down if you lower the rod its all to do with timing.you only need a couple of lessons then you would understand more.wish i could give you some pointers but im not going your way till november

Hi phil,

Well iam using the greys but i have also got a flextec 10ft 6 8/9weight and i have also got a flextec 9ft 6/7weight and i have also got a viper 9ft 6 6/7 so in your opinion which do you think would be better for me to start with.

As i have already got the bug and just keep buying loads of rods and reels and lines i am more inclined to think maybe a couple of lessons would pay for itself very quickly and then i would not be buying stuff i do not need.

If you could please advice before i go in the morning that would be great.

Many Thanks

Welcome Aboard to Scotland-Would love to fish up there -only ever been to Scotland once and my daughter was the result. Love your country as the mountains and streams were so reminiscent of my native Washington state. You'll learn a lot on this forum and don't hesitate or feel shy to ask any questions. They may seem silly to you, but it's the only way you learn and believe you me the forumites are always very willing to help> Tight Lines
