Smile Thanks Tony

I suppose you could say that, but I've still got a lot to learn. Most of my trout fishing in the USA was small streams and rivers and I struggle for distance on stillwaters here in england. You sound an interesting sort of person, Tony. Where do you live? Have you ever visited america or tried any fishing over there?

Hi Flytier
Yes we are all continually learning which is part of the fun.
I live in Lincolnshire, started my first couple of seasons fishing the still waters but now Im hooked on the rivers, mostly in the N. Yorkshire dales. There's no beating fast flowing river fishing in my opinion, a bigger challenge though.

I'd love to fly fish in America, maybe when I get the kids through Uni.
My boss is from Montana and fishes there, it sounds fantastic.

Tony

Default Hello Again Tony

Unfortunately never been to your part of the uk-I'd love to fish the Yorkshire Dales. One word of advice-if you fish Montana I think you'd be wise to wait till July. Last year I travelled (what seems forever) from South Dakota to Washington state and back in early to mid June and all the rivers and streams were in flood and totally unfishable. If you drive through the state of Montana it seems you're in it forever. Went out in a motor home with friends I went to high school with many moons ago and stayed at RV camps in Broadus and Three Forks, the third night spent at Lake Couer D'Aleyn, Idaho. Yet my brother drove to South Dakota in September and said everything was bone-dry again. Probaly best to check the conditions on the NAFFF before you go. I'd love to try St. Regis, Montana as it claims to be the "Fly Fishing Capital of the World". I must say even with the rivers well up I was still tempted to stop and try if even for a few hours or so-and it don't cost the eart, either!

Default Dales

The Yorkshire Dales is a lovely part of the country, if you get the chance go up you wont regret it.

Sounds like a great holiday you had, I'd always be tempted to cast a line despite the river being too high, you just never know.
If I ever get the opportunity to go to Montana, I'll bear the timing in mind, thanks.
We're heading into spring before too long, I guess you are well ready to cast a line by now.

I've fished right through the year this time something I've not done before. Pleased I did though, winter can give some cracking fishing, despite the cold. Its also good to see how the rivers change from month to month.

Yes Tony it was a Wonderful trip, but I suppose as it was mainly to visit old friends and family-some I'd Never met before the fishing was really incidental and I must admit if I'd been driving I would have had to try at least a few casts on those wonderful massive rivers in those states. I did catch my first zander(we call them walleyes), and smallmouth bass on fly gear so it was an eye opener. I'd bought a new 10 foot rod and large arbour reel at Cabelas, Mitchell, South Dakota primarily targeting big pike with zonkers . The pike didn't want to know, but the bass fight just as hard as any trout on that gear-and amazingly even zanders put up a fight on fly gear. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised to try it sometime. I even had my only perch on the Missouri River 3 pounds 6 ounces on a Redheaded Cat's Whisker.
