Sorry to divert the thread, but I am curious to know whether that is Bill Currie in the photograph?

Yes, its Bill. He fishes this lovely beat with me at least once a year (my photo). On his last visit he hooked a fish after five minutes of arriving. We asked him what took him so long. ;-)

The Lambley beat is one of my South Tyne favourites and, very unusually for the Tyne system, double bank and totally private.

Bill has just returned from his week on the Dee and is fit and well even after two very nasty strokes. His brain 'is bust' as he says but he can still fish! Though Bill's very-short term memory is poor he can remember fish he caught 50 years ago!

The cottages are really first class (most rooms are en-suite) with a newly opened spa and games room. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit at any time of the year. A 4lb brownie was caught there last year too. Aidan Pollard and owner Jim Slasor are running this interesting trip which combines both the North Tyne and the South.

Colin.

I don't suppose he caught the fish on a Frances? I know he used to have a love of them in red and black, often very "lucky" with them, but they do nothing for me.

Just two heart attacks? I had thought it was two since he moved from Lilliesleaf. Always glad to hear that he is still with us, though with his legacy of writing we will never loose his spirit and enthusiasm for the sport.

Bill likes his Currie's shrimp! I haven't seen him use the Frances in the UK but the red & black versions account for the majority of all fish caught in Iceland. I've never used it over here (apart from the odd cast) but do know others who have used it on the Tyne with success. In the clear water of Iceland you can see the curiosity and interest this fly creates amongst the fish.

Last year in Iceland, Richard Hewitt (admin) was standing dowstream watching my fly as it came amongst a small shoal of fish and shouted to me when I'd had a take. I had know idea - as I'd felt nothing! This fish ran 300 yards back down to the sea with me attempting to follow it. It ended well - a very distant catch and release!
