Good Man Bert.
Cayo Largo used to a reasonably priced place to fish when Casa Batida Fishing Club ran the operation. Since then the price has sky rocketed up and Avalon have persuaded the Cuban Goverment to ban all DIY fishing on the Island they will soon be moving their operation into other parts of Cuba and banning DIY fishing there ready for the influx of Americans.

I fished Cuba with Avalon over xmas, staying on the floating hotel 'The Tortuga' in the Jardines De La Reina. It was to be my 'holiday of a life time' and in no way did the experience disappoint. Expensive? Of course but the best things in life normally are. I could not afford to pay for such a trip again so I am glad to have done so before the yanks ultimately return.
My trip to the Jardines was so completely satisfying that strangely I have no tremendous desire to return....been there and got the t-shirt.
Future trips will no doubt be DIY but would probably be a poor substitute for the Avalon trip. Therefore I will concentrate on other regions, keeping things fresh.
Funnily enough, just returned from Spain a few days ago where the fishing was more exciting and dramatic than that experienced in Cuba. The Mediterranean Pardete at least match a bonefish for speed and outmuscle the Tarpon I hooked in Cuba (admittedly only babies of 40lb).
A Pardete of just under 10lb required one hour of hard battle to bring to the net, impressive compared to the ten minutes required to land bones and tarpon in Cuba.
Even better, this fantastic fishing is only a 2 hour flight from the UK and can be done on a very limited budget. Perhaps one day Pardete will be the new bonefish!
