Hi, Colin. I stayed in the Stomness hostel in June '09 and it's an excellently run, comfortable place - and a good price, still, too!
Fwiw, I fished a bay near Ireland along the A964. The instructions were something like: "Along the road until you cross a bridge then right at the phone box and park 50 yards down the dirt track". The sea was just a short walk away with easy sand to wade.
Sorry that's so vague, but I don't have my OS map nearby. Maybe someone here with better knowledge can help?
I didn't catch anything but I saw a stunning 3 1/2 lber caught by another angler.
I really recommend that you pop into Sinclair's tackle shop in Stromness and ask for advice, they've always been helpful when I've visited. Also, you might consider buying an OTFA Visiting Angler membership (only £20 p/a) to support the work they do.
I camped in the dunes near Finsbay for over a week that June but saw no fish jumping. There were a few seals around, though, which might indicate that there were some sea trout there?
If you get good weather try a spell on Loch Clumly, a little jewel of a trout loch when it's not turbid.
Hope you have a great time - only sorry I can't join you!
