Default Magic Leader - I'm Speechless!

Tell me this was just a fluke...

Yesterday I went fishing with one of our distinguished forum members up in Penrith. It was my first time back in the river after a few years away from fishing and I just accepted my rustiness was the reason why our morning performance was 7-0 in Mr Trout's favour (albeit one of his seven was only as big as his little finger).

We stopped at lunch time (to try out his new Kelly Kettle) and for him to give me a pep talk. "Here, try this" he said, as he handed me what looked like a raggy bit of cotton. "What's that?" I asked, "it's a furled leader" he replied "try it". He spent a few minutes explaining to me what it was and how to fit it onto my line and off we went for round two.

I'm going to split the results of the afternoon into three parts to explain what happened:

First part of afternoon - Both of us with furled leaders: MrT,4-Me,5

Middle part of afternoon - He used the tapered leader I bought in John Norris' that morning. I continued with his raggy bit of cotton: MrT,0-Me,3

End Part of afternoon: We swapped rods completely for two hours: MrT,4-Me,0

This whole experience spooked me - I'm beginning to think there was something quite magic about his raggy bit of cotton. Surely there can't be.

I suppose it also could have been a dodgy leader from Norris'... I'm going to experiment further but I wasn't giving it him back!

Nothing to do with your equipment I fear.
It’s all to do with those dark mountain men and the wizardry and witchcraft thats practiced up there.
They would sacrifice virgins before fishing a few decades ago but hey who’s going to find one of those in Penrith these days.
Did you see him sticking pins in a doll at any time or perhaps tossing small bones into a wooden bowl and chanting to himself? Chances are something funny was going on and next time fasten a crows foot, two thistles and a woodcock bladder round your neck or you may never catch again.

ruddy long post for someone whos speachless

Like that AH, ever heard of hens teeth, about the same chance of finding those as a virgin up here now.

SAB was just a bit rusty perhaps, but even though I say it myself, watching him for some time, his casting and turnover did improve.
I would say that though wouldn't I.

I, too, have been very impressed with Steven's Leaders but my preference would be to see them incorporate a small Tippet Ring.

Just personal choice, I know he doesn't care for them.

I flirted with furled leaders a few years ago and decided that they were not for me but was persuaded to give them another go by Stuart Crofts after seeing him knock fish after fish out of the Derbyshire Wye with a dry fly on a 3' furled leader and 3' tippet and since then I've tried a Ron Dibble "SC custom" and one of Steven's and have been delighted with them.

The breakthrough was using a much shorter furled leader than my first attempt and then attaching a relatively short tippet. Accuracy in casting easily overcomes any concerns with overall length of leader. I defy anyone using a 15 - 20' mono leader to put their fly down as accurately as they could with a 3-5' furled leader plus a similar length tippet, especially if there is more than a breath of wind.

PM MrTrout and tell him what you need. I just got some in three and five foot and they cast beautifully.

Take care
