Default Changing Seasons Effecting Stocked Rainbows

Hi All

Now that summer has more less gone and winter moves in

Can anyone tell me what the change of season does to the rainbows?

Am i right in sayin they turn on to lures this time of year?

I really think it depends upon the water you are fishing, Blagdon last week buzzers and damsels were still catching well. Clatworthy on Exmoor on Saturday they wanted orange lures or again blue flash damsels. As always just try a variety of approaches and depths.

trout are typically a cold water species. in hot water they become lethargic disinterested in food and prone to disease. once the water cools, they pick up the pace and become much better quarry. IMO a change in the weather affects the bigger fish more than the smaller ones, hence lechlade's propensity to completely 'die' while next door Bushyleaze is fishing its head off. Largely when i'm fishing, i think of the fish like myself. if it's a day i would enjoy, then i think the fish will too. hence cool crisp autumnal days will beat a cold wet easterly rain and a balmy evening in summer is preferential to standing about in the mid-day heat. crazy i know, but there you go!

If the weather's 'on the change', I usually give it a day or so to settle intot he new pattern before fishing

Just my observations.

Cheers
Alex

It's got to the stage now that some fisheries close for 6-8 weeks in high summer, Arlington reservoir and Haywards Farm are just two examples. Admittedly the reason at Arlington is to do with heavy draw-drown of water as well as the weather.

If given the opportunity, rainbow trout will feed all through an English winter and can be in superb condition, very well worth catching. After all, our friends in the USA enjoy wonderful steelhead fishing in winter, and steelhead are sea-going rainbows just as our sea trout are browns that go to estuary or the open sea.

BB, actually that's not a bad rule of thumb about conditions you've devised there...

With that in mind, will it be worth having a trip out this Sunday - sounds like it's going to be chilly by then? John
