Default Streamers - what leader and line?

Was doing a bit of dry and nymphing tonite.

Caught a nice 3/4 lb trout on the CDC and Elk ( thanks Hans ).

Next thing a fisherman fishing spinners moved in about 10 bloody yards upstream of me and caught two of the biggest trout I've seen from my river ( both about 2lb) in 5 minutes fishing ( water quite high and brown) .

Its time to try the Streamers.....

I have the streamers, but only a floating line and normal tapered leader.

Will this suffice?

Have only until thursday week to try it due to close of season so all help appreciated.

Thanks

I've tried this on and off over the last three seasons and find that adding a di3 polytip to my normal floater works ok. Add about 8 foot of 5lb fluorocarbon and yer good to go (you'd want at least a #5 rod for this though and preferably a fast actioned baby with a bit of poke).
It's worked alright for me, but there will be others on here who fish the method more regularly who will have their own take on things.

Cheers Matt, i dont have any sinking leaders and may not have time to get them so might have to take my chances. I know streamers wont thrill the tweedies, but its frustrating when a half competent fly man like me has to stand back and watch a bloke with a Mepps hammer trout of a size i've never seen in the river !

Interestingly, my best fish now come consistently to well presented dries rather than nymphs, but this guy was just horsing out the fish.

Thankfully he was putting them back - hope their mouths were ok after those trebles....

It depends on the water size and flow. I like fishing streamers in the top third of the water column, so I'm usually fishing a floating line and longer leader (7-9'). In that case I'll adjust the weight of the streamer (or added weight) to the water flow to hit the right depth. I normally fish a heavy hook and often a bead to get down a foot or two in fairly flowing water. Mend as needed to get the exact depth and swim.

If I know I'm throwing streamers all day and on a bigger water I'll add on a quick sinking leader. I carry a bunch, but an extra fast polyleader is a good start. For that setup I'll fish about 2' of 8 lb fluoro tippet.

I also carry loop connected segments of sinking line which I'll use like a sinking leader to make up a setup on stream. I also carry two strands of leadcore in case I need to get down fast in a deep run. That said, I only go this far on big, fast water where I need to get down fast. If I'm using these then I've also got a short tippet of about 2', normally 8 lb or so.

In most trout streams though, you can get by just fine with setup one above. Half the fun is seeing the take (or seeing the last second refusal).

Thanks,
Rick

Spider
I bought a cheap 6# this year for fishing streamers (and the occcasional boat trip) - Fulling Mill 10' 6# I think. I use a teeny T-130 sink tip line with it with fairly good success whenever I use it. The rod has enough power to throw weighted streamers a good distance and and the line gets the flies down fast, although if buying now I might go for the next Teeny up in the range (T150?).

Thanks boys. My local water may be back to normal colour and depth by the time i fish again at the weekend, but the spinning fisherman was a bit of a wake up call to have a go at Streamers.....

In one of my haunts in Italy a local in tatty hip waders clutching a plastic bag and a no-name spinning rod, the whole outfit probably cost as much as my leader, started chatting to me about the 6lb trout he had taken yesterday just over there - where my thank-god-the-ladybat-doesn't-know-how-expensive-rod couldn't get me.

I understand I have a lot to learn, I know that throwing money at it isn't a solution, I know that fly fishing has a sucess rate 30% of any other method but I wish to God in his heaven that the others would stop pulling the big ones out of the river so I could at least have a go at them.

As horrible as it may seem to those who consider Streamers and Wooly B*ggers as not being fly fishing but these will consistantly catch more large fish than any other method. Big trout tend to be carnivores and are more likely to move after a larger prey. I've always got a few wooley buggers and streamers, both weighted and unweighted, in my fly box for when the going gets tough or there is a deep pool I want to explore. I use a floating line with a normal tippet and just pinch on a lead weight in front of the fly if I need to get down deep and fast.

Take care

Terry

How do you guys fish the streamers? There are a few weir pools on my local beat that hold good fish and I would love to have a crack with some streamers for something new.

Do you cast across an let the correct draw them round?

I've been experimenting with fishing weir pools lately and have found that the most productive set-up is a sinking line (in my case a 5wt Rio Mainstream 'Full sink' probably about a DI3? It's the only sinker I possess...) with short leader and a bead head fly. A damsel or something with a bit of a tail. I have tried a floater with fast sinking tip but the line tends to get pulled around out of the main flow too quickly and the fly does not fish very deep.
How and where I fish this set-up depends very much on where you can get a cast into the pool but generally fishing downstream seems to be more effective. I generally try to get as much line out as possible and let it get pulled round in the flow. The line will probably get pushed into the side current where your more likely to find a fish. When the line is drawn tight by the current start to strip/stop/strip. Fishing the fly aggressively with plenty of movement has got me more takes than just letting the fly swing round in the current.
Its a case of trying casting into different areas of the pool, lengths of line, mends etc. to get the fly into areas that may hold fish.
It's a fun way to fish and can produce some very solid takes as well as bigger fish.

Andy
