Default weird and wonderful fishing tales...

Thought i would start a thread on unusual events or anything weird or wonderful that might have happened to you while fishing, whether it be river or loch fishing.... got inspired by Red Devils post on his first fishing outing where he lost his fly and bobber and then got it back again...

I'll kick start it off....(and no fibs..!! Must be real..)

I was fishing a local fishery last season that has a carp lake and a small section of river that flows into a reasonably sized pond which holds some rainbows and browns... While fishing the river section, on a fully extended cast, i hooked a rainbow of probably 3,5lbs, and to my amazement it torpedo jumped straight out the water on to the steep bank beside ... It then proceeded to flap about 3 or 4 times before launching itself back into the water, only to wrap the leader around some bramble and the hook pulled..

It took me 5 or 10 minutes to take in what just happened, couldnt believe it..!! I have refrained from telling the story as it just doesnt sound real...this happened to anyone else..???

Almost. I hooked a 12lb salmon once that shot at full stream accross the river and straight up a gravel bar on my bank. completely beached himself!

My weirdest tale, and again i swear it's true is about a big fish i was stalking at dever. the fish wasn't really interested, but it was the only decent one i'd found so was sticking with it. I cast my weighted GRHE at the fish a little short and the fish swam by underneath it. shortly afterward my fly line jerked toward the fish indicating a take! Thinking i must have mistaken what i though was my fly for something else, i struck and the fish started shaking its head, properly hooked! it was only after about 5 mins that i started to notice something wrong, ie that my leader had doubled in length... I then saw my fly some 8 feet from the fish, seemingly hovering in mid air... finally when i landed the fish, i noticed that as my fly had sunk, it had passed through a loop in another angler's leader that was trailing behind the fish. (having snapped him) - what are the chances of that?

Not fly fishing but I once had a salmon jump out of the river and take a devon that I had just pulled clear of the water at my feet.

A little similar to BrownieBasher's story once whilst spinning with a devon minnow I snagged a swivel through the eye and recovered a trace with another minnow that a friend had lost the previous day - what are the chances!

Something I witnessed rather than happened to me directly;

Years ago, fishing at Damerham, two anglers were fishing opposite each other, about 30 yards apart on opposite sides of the lake - casting and retrieving away like mad. Not the optimal way of tackling a small clearwater, as you'll see from other threads here, but folks didn't know better then. Both anglers had (or thought they had) terrific takes simultaneously...only to find they had hooked one another's flies. Odds against that ?

More recently, in my Langford days, I used to own a Hardy Superlite landing net. Approaching the end of the fight with a good rainbow, the net was deployed next to me, quietly floating and ready to use. The fish jumped, and landed smack in the middle of the net. Made landing the fish easy !

Default My odd but lucky day.

I hooked a rainbow fishing a dry fly(or so I thought) turns out I hooked the one foot piece of nylon that the last angler left having snapped off on the fish. An hour later I got my point fly snagged on the bottom fishing a gold head on the point and two olive mini lures on the dropper. I got in the water and started tugging left and right...suddenly the snag came loose. A rainbow had taken the dropper! A wee while later and a different location, I went to lift out and noticed the top dropper was tangled. I swept the rod, grabbed the dropper, started to untangle it, yip, you guessed it, a bow took the point fly and I played it hand lining the leader! Pleased I wasn't untangling the middle dropper I might have been hooked on the top dropper!

A few night ago myself and a fellow forum member both did a night sea trouting session.
i was happily fishing a pool while he was approx 100yards upstream fishing another pool.
now flowing water makes a noise although the night was quiet you couldn't hear the person next to you speak.
i proceeded to fish with the utmost concentration as one does giving a quick glance over my right shoulder to see him still fishing.

i continued to fish when i head a voice in my ear asking 'any luck'
well i kid you not i gave out the biggest girls blouse scream of my live words to the effect of BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. and if any one else was witin the vacinity of z scream they would probably thin wtf is going on.

i turned to see z friend standing happily laughing at the same time puzzeled as to my reaction of not hearing him walking behind me.
we still laugh to this day and that is the first genuine time i felt my sking leave my body absolutely hillarious.
