could someone confirm if this is a salmon?

No doubt about it.

As aenoon said , quite a coloured hen fish. Guess she would have been in the river a little while.

thought it was a small grilse (just over 3lb) caught by my friend in shetland. (no rivers there )

Where did he catch it then ?

Doesnt look like sea caught fish !

this one entered a burn mouth, so i guess just like a small river!
although i cant imagine it would have been in there too long. usually they come and go with every few tides although i'm sure a few do stay a bit longer. i dont know much about salmon, but a lot of them seem to be quite 'dirty' looking.

It is indeed a very coloured little grilse and I hope it was able to swim away and carry on with its 'business'.
