Default Are you a 'sucker for hype'?

Now the latest fly rods have finally gone through the 700 pound barrier, how much of the hype behind these rods do you believe?

Quote; "These rods are the last word in contemporary design"

Come on you said that about the last one, oh yes, and the one before that!

So it should be "These rods are the Last, Last, but Last word in contemporary design.

Quote; " How can a rod that is so light have such endless power"

Endless, you mean it will never end, and never run out of power, wow?

Quote; Match this with a degree of "feel" that is unsurpassed and you have the finest fly rods on the planet.

I'm glad we cleared that up, I cannot wait to see fly rods from another planet?

Unsurpassed; What about the next new rod?

Now were is that cheque book?

Basically, it's boleaux. I have a range of rods from Odyssey through to Loomis GLX and can honestly say they're all almost as good as eachother at their various jobs. The Loomis is supposed to be the casting tool, but i prefer the feel of my Bloke XL50 and that's the rod i pull out when salmon fishing. The Greys GRXi is softer actioned so i prefer it on smaller waters or rivers where the TCR is massively overgunned

Hype has never really done it for me, more of a bargain hunter. My current stillwater rod is the Airflo Delta Classic 7#, retailed at £53 if memory serves. I can cast perfectly, loads really well with pirates lines and catches fish. That's all I need. Am looking to get the 4# for river work.

Default Ripped off.

I am getting a little sick of the hype, new this and new that, Ok tackle manufacturers, answer me this.

I have a Tri-Cast Volterra roach pole, at 15.7metres full length it can be held comfortably and will land fish over 20lb

http://www.tri-castfishing.co.uk/reviews/jon_walker.pdf

If I break this then Tri-cast (based in the UK, all manufacturing is done on site) will sort this, this pole is almost 16 metres of carbon and cost £1200 when I bought it, this came with a further 5 top 3 and 4 kits, yes, free extra carbon for your money.

Now if someone can explain to me how 3 metres of carbon can cost me 2 thirds of the price of 16 metres of carbon I will listen but I would like to see the fly rod tested the way Tri Cast test their poles and backed up as well as tri cast back up their kit

I like reading the hype, the tackle never really comes up the the hype extrapolated about new products! I like looking for a bargain; and have become extremely interested in lightweight fly fishing tackle; but balanced to fish comfortably when on the river or stream.

Is tackle over priced? Quite a lot of it is!! It's best left for the extravagant angler! Which we all are to a certain extent.

Not any more, but I used to be earlier in my angling career, and I think you need to have been around the block a bit to see through it all.

Chris68's question is a damned good one; I have heard that the very high prices that Sage, Loomis, Tibor and other high end US suppliers fetch in the UK is down to the current weak pound against the dollar, but Jack Simpson still manages to build rods on Sage blanks in the UK and sell them well below Sage retail prices.....

I do wonder as well if all this focus on expensive kit is harming recruitment into fly fishing ? If I was a coarse or sea fisher thinking about trying fly and saw some of these prices without an experienced angler to help me, I would swiftly forget the whole idea.

Being a Yorkshireman, I'm naturally a tight git. I always look for value for money. I don't believe any of the "new improved rod design," "new improved fly line tapers," or "low refractive light index making it invisible to fish" codswallop. I doubt whether the trout are all that impressed either.

Been fly fishing for 25 years. Owned them all, Sage, Loomis , Orvis, Winston et al.....all the high end ones and everything inbetween.

The prices are now getting obscene. Loomis NRX starting at £800?? WTF??

Mid range gear, like Vision, Guideline, loop etc, performs just as well, or better than some of the so called "top end" stuff.

I will concede that the Orvis Helios rods really are a leap forward in lightness and are superb casting rods....they would need to be at £600 though.

I've made a decision to just make do with what I have, until i'm blown away with the so called "latest" designs..

Slight exageration there?

At current exchange rate US Dollars to Pounds (USD/GBP) Currency Converter. a $715 G. Loomis NRX Fly Fishing Rod NRX 1084-4 - G Loomis Superstore - American Legacy Fishing Company works out at only £464.

The trout NRX range starts at $15 cheaper.

I don't buy into the hype and never have.

I don't confine my fishing to just fly fishing. If you're really into fishing,as opposed to tackle collecting, you quickly come to understand that the last word in catching fish comes down to angling skill.

But as another forum member very wisely pointed out, for many modern anglers, the pursuit of tackle has to a great extent replaced the pursuit of fish.

Blame this on urbanization, decline in access, laziness, the Internet, whatever, it's more than just a little bit true. Tackle makers can hardly be blamed for trying to tap into the angler who mainly fishes for more and more gear.
