Default Campervans

T'other 'alf has decided that what is missing in our life is the joy of owning a camper.

She has fallen for a '70's Type 2 Volkswagen, which is a good thing because I know the air-cooled ones inside out, but are there any viable alternatives?

Since my old Passat Estate will have to make way for the new arrival, we need something that I can use as daily transport, but can cope with the motorways without having to slipstream trucks.

Any recommendations out there?

I had a Renault Traffic - great fishing base.

your type 2 is a great idea but as someone who has owned both beetles and campers and rebuilt both from the ground up then i would urge you to make sure you by one with more metal than rust. the panels are relatively easy to repair/replace but the engine bay can be a pain if you need to drop the engine also inner wheel arches. there is a company in the uk that sells brand new ones if thats what your after. jon.

Thanks Jon, as I said, I know the old VW's pretty well. We ran a beetle up the drag strips in the 70's, but I've been out of the loop for a while.

Traffic is too big for our needs I'm afraid DB, or anything Transit sized, I do enough of the driving already.

Anyone had a Toyota Hiace? Not as pretty as a Type 2, but possibly more practical for longer journeys.

I would go for the VW but get a water cooled one and if possible the 5 cylinder
will cope with all the motorway miles you can through at her.

get the vw and try and get a slightly bigger engine fitted. a well built 1776cc will have you easily keeping up with all traffic.

Get one of the later VWs, one with the engine at the front, probably cost you as much as a good type 2, but very reliable and great to drive.

Just part xed a 51 plate for a newer one, the old one had 100k on it with no problems worth mentioning, the new one, 08 plate, is superb, would rather drive it than my car.

Three letter acronym, Mark. LPG.

I know the Subaru boxer engine sits nicely in an old VW shell, and some of the Japanese alternatives already come as dual/fuel.

I can always walk to work.
