Default Welded loops or braided loops?

Hi all,

Would like your opinions on whether welded loops are any better than braided loops? Have just found a couple of lines with welded knots and was thinking about using them instead of cuting them off and using a braid.
I know there are people who dislike braided loops anyway and nail knot a loop instead but I find that a bit too complicated and want an easier option.

Cheers!

I like welded loops, particularly when i use long leaders, the way the welded loop goes through the rod rings is so smooth. I like it for their ability to float high. They do seem to wear out fast, but it's light work to make them yourself..

A nail knot is also a good way, i don't like the braided loops but most people have no problems with them.

Hope this helped..

Jerry

I cut off the welded loops, but I might not if they get a bit smaller/stronger.but so far I find them clumsy.

Hi Jim why don't you make them your self it's easy, and you can make the loops as big or small as you want..

I always think welded loops are a bit big and heavy. Prefer the Roman Moser loops on the end of my fly lines.

Depends on what you are after!
welded loops are generally of a far higher breaking strain than mosers, trout is 15lbs breaking strain, and salmon 30 lbs breaking strain, and of a higher internal diameter, so should not be used on lines less than #9 weight.
Manufacturers welded loops have breaking strain simillar to line, and in some instances this is preferable to lower b/s of braided loops!

I learnt a lesson with welded loops recently. About two weeks ago I purchased 2 hardy mach 55 spey lines. One for a friend and one for me. My mate used his first after which he rang me warning me about the welded loop. He wasn't fishing a half an hour when the loop came apart and he lost his cast.He later called to my house with a braided loop advising me to fit it to mine. I checked the welded loop on mine and thought it was strong enough so I left it. No marks for guessing what happened next. First time out with the line the loop broke apart after only a few casts.

Take a fools advice............. Cut off welded loops and either fit a braided loop or tie a nail not

Default welded loop failure

Has to be a fault in the manufacture.I have several lines with welded loops although not the make mentioned and have had no trouble with them whatsoever.I do used a furled leader in most cases and to close the loop right up if it looks a little bulky I go through the loop again with the tag end forming what I know to be a catspaw which gives an extra purchase on the welded loop.I never just tie a blood knot or similar as a connection to a welded loop or braided because I just do not like it that way.We all have our quirks I guess and I know a lot of folks are not fond of welded loops but have to say ok for me.

Best JP

It wa a loop to loop connection we both used. I am aware that tying a knot can damage the loop so this is the way i tied it. I wont be fooled into using one again. Next time ................ CHOP, CHOP
