Exclamation River Wye trip

Hi, I'm heading down to Wales next week for a few days fishing. Am staying in Builth Wells and intend to fish the Wye & Usk Foundation waters. Will probably fish a mix of the booking office beats and the Roving Voucher beats. I've fished the Wye a couple of times before and love it at this time of year. Grayling fishing can be spectacular!

Anyway, I was looking for a bit I'd advice on which beats are fishing well at the moment and where to go to make the best of my time.

All advice gratefully recieved. Thanks in advance.

Daran

Hi Daran, keep meaning to get up there myself, lovely water to fish this time of the year. My friends who fish the river round there say its fishing really well for Grayling, not so much big ones but plenty of fish.
I was advised only this morning to try a Griffiths gnat if they are rising.
Always done ok myself fishing spiders this time of year.
Feel a days holiday coming on!

Have a good time.
Steve

One of my favourite beats is Gofynne on the Irfon. Very pretty, easy wading and you will get a reasonable number of fish.

I was up there last week and didn't quite hit double figures including a stonking Wild Trout.

Quite a short beat and peace and tranquility reign. There are more profilic beats, if you want volume, but few offer a "nicer" days fishing.

The Wye is fishing well at the moment around Builth with plenty of Grayling to be caught...the biggest problem in the winter months can be locating the fish but they will still be well spread out this time of year so most of the likely looking water has a chance to yield one or two!

As far as Wye & Usk beats on the upper Wye then Abernant has been producing a lot of fish recently and as royvs has mentioned the Irfon is as pretty as it gets this time of year.

Enjoy your few days Daran, (PM sent).

Not long back from that area myself. do feel like i missed out on the Irfon during my visit. i could see it from where i was staying and longed to give the river a try around the irfon bridge rd area but was unsure from where to get the neccessary day ticket from? that and a small handfull of roving vouchers/family commitments kept me away.

Sabsman , you have pm incoming.

Kurt.

The town water can be good fun and at £10 is good value a large beat of both the wye and irfon (tickets from nibblets the ironmongers).

The top end of the main river beat is my favourite area...im a bit of a beginner and further down by the park you can be on show a bit to the public for my liking ... execept their is some nice riffles there that can produce some descent sized grayling.

anybody seen any salmon up there yet? im heading down for 2 weeks at the end of sept to hopefully have a nudge (probably not at the salmon but if the rain picks up maybe!)

Hi Daran,

There is plenty of water in the rivers at the moment after the Fri/Sat deluge, when I left Builth this evening the Irfon was dropping nicely and without anymore rain should be more than fishable by Tuesday. The Wye may take a day or two longer.

A Wye & Usk beat that copes well with excessive rain is the Clettwr - full of fish and if you like small stream fishing in all its rugged glory then this is as tough as it gets but without doubt will give you the most sense of achievement when you get back to your car...be prepared for a hike!

Good luck,

Sabsman.

Thanks for the advice guys. Just leaving the North East now.....and it's raining! Hopefully it'll be ok down on the Wye. I'll take some advice from Wye and Usk office, but do fancy the Irfon. I'll let you all know how fishing goes.

Cheers

Ok, it pretty much rained all night and the Wye is up and running a filthy brown colour. Fishing the Wye and tribs around Builth Wells was out today. Met up with Kim Tribe of FlyfishingWales and fished the town water in Brecon, on the Usk. Even though the river was up a couple of feet and still rising I've had ten trout to 2lb, and lost a hatful more. I can heartily recommend Kim as a guide, without him I probably wouldn't have even bothered to fish.

Tomorrow is a different story. The main Wye is up and looking horrible, the usk was rising when I left it late afternoon. I can see the Irfon from hotel and that looks un-fishable at the moment. I'll have to see how it all looks in the morning, but it's not looking promising.

If anyone with local knowledge has suggestions, I'm all ears.

Cheers, Daran

I think you can count your blessings that you managed to get out on the rivers today...sounds like Kim put you in the right spot.

I must say looking at the river gauges the last couple of days I guessed things were going to be out of sorts around Builth, you may have to resign yourself to a stillwater venue until things get better...with little or no rain forecast for the next couple of days the Irfon could well be back on song by Thursday.

Hopefully you manage to get a chance on the rivers again

Sabsman.
