Question Rod Dampening - from where

Hi All, This maybe an ambiguous question, but, who was the first individual or Fly Rod Company to use rod dampening?

How is dampening added to a rod blank?

Best Regards

Stuart

I'd say Alexander Grants 'Vibration' greenheart rods, circa 1894, the material was chosen for it's frequency making them slimmer, lighter, more powerful, better 'behaved', this I'd have thought would include dampening as the reduction in material would reduce the swing weight thus reducing the 'wobble' at the end of the cast.

Default What about Glass and Carbon rods

Hi Darren, Thanks for the reply. These Greenheart rods were immense beasties were'nt they?

How is dampening attributed to modern rods?

Regards

Stuart

The best damper is the hand holding the rod - loosen off the grip.

Default How much has changed?

One of the reasons I ask is, because rod design and blank building have come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 - 15 years.

I remember trying to get on with a Hardy Viscount, 10ft 7#, some seven or eight years ago, that was said to be a sound rod. It was recommended by the retailer at Sportfish - Danny North as a Crisp action. What does that mean? Now that had very little dampening, which was evident on line delivery, because of the shock waves down the fly line.

How does multi-modulous carbon fibre weave, differ now, from 10 - 15 years ago?

Perhaps someone could shed light on this.

Regards

Stuart
