Default What sub surface line?

Hi,

The majority of my fishing is from a boat on reservoirs.

Most of the time I fish a floating line with a long leader. Having read some interesting articles and books on the subject of fly lines I'm of the opinion that unless the trout are up in the first couple of feet of water I would be better of with a sinking line say a Di3 or Di5. I could then vary my wait before retriving and the speed of my retrive to find the water level at which the fish are feeding.

Fishing a floating line and long leader seems a bit of a scatter gun approach in that of the 3 flies I'm using 1 or 2 may be of no use as they are sitting in dead water. A sinking line will enable me to more effectively fish all of my flies when i find the correct depth.

Am I talking nonsense?

If I do make sense what density line be a good line to go for? I appreciate that weather conditions, especially wind speed when boat fishing requires a quicker sinking line. Also would I be better with a straight sinker or a sweep line?

Cheers

Fazzer

Well i would ask Charlie, on here if hes about , hes a match guy who knows his bisness, but as far as floating lines are concerned , ive used 20ft tippets down to 18ft of water dont believe in the first few feet principle, im certain charlie would say get a few sinkers of various sink rates

Thanks for all the recommendations. guys, although there are plenty of people on here more experienced than me.

You are absolutely right that you need one or more sinkers if you are going to be consistently successful boat fishing. I actually carry about a dozen and know people with more than twenty ! The idea is to get all the flies in the taking zone for as long as possible.

If I only were allowed one, it would probably be a Di5 sweep or a Di3 normal - both of those can be retrieved fast and shallow or allowed to sink deep in a reasonable time.

Having said that, right now till it gets colder most of the fish are in the top 3 or 4ft most places so an intermediate would be a good line.

Many shops are offering a deal on two Sixth Sense lines, so if you can run to that get a Fast Glass and a Di5 Sweep. Also, remember that these lines have little stretch so you need to fish stronger leaders than usual - I start on 11.5lbs and will only go to 9.5 if I am struggling.

Charlie
