Default 7 days out

IT,s now my seventh time out fly fishing, i used a buzzer, and a dry fly
at different times , i kept changing fly to try to tempt a fish ,and changed buzzer, but to no avail its getting to be very expensive casting practice,
i really dont know what to do for best, maybe go back coarse fishing.
There was no one else fishing the lake so could not get any answers there,
any idea,s what i should be using?? apart from maggots,
keith

Nowflyin

You have my sympathy, I've been there! Without knowing your water, tackle or style there's nothing much I can say to help. In all honesty, despite what you may have seen from some on this forum, a few quid spent on a lesson by a qualified instructor would be money well spent and is what I would urge you to do before going back to the dark side!

Better luck next time.

If no one else was on I would ask myself why? bad time at the moment although fish are catchable the water is still too warm at around 16-17 degrees, it will be better when the temp drops to around 13 degrees.

Where are you fishing? Could you see fish moving?

More detail will get some better answers.

Hey Keith, il have the DVD in the post this week. Been mega busy with work. As you are only in derby, I would suggest maybe some fishing instruction at Rutland. Although it is a very big water, they should be able to offer you some quality tuition and get you catching fish. It's about an hour away from derby, and hopefully it would help you.

It might have been good advice, or he might have just been taking the p.

There are so many variables its difficult to tell you what to do. Were you fishing a single fly, floating line, how long was your leader, were you fishing it static or retrieving it, fast or slow?

If you could see fish moving/feeding in the top of the water I would be tempted to try the 'washing line'. Try a 15' leader, with 2 droppers at about 5' from the line and 10'. Tie a booby on the point and a buzzer and a nymph on each of the droppers. Use a floating line, if you see a fish moving, cast out to it, if no fish moving cast to your left or right, retrieve the line slowly, then make your next cast a bit further round from the last one. Vary the retrieve rate, put on a sinking line, let it sink a bit and retrieve again, or leave it static and see what happens.

Hope this helps.

Good advice from Brownieseeker, a days introduction costs about £60 at rutland, http://www.anglianwater.co.uk/leisur...hing/learning/

Sounds like similar behaviour to a water I fish. Plenty of fish jumping but none taking.
This time of year can mean very hard fishing on small still waters where oxygen levels and water temperature put fish off their feed. Best advice is leave it alone until a bit of rain and some cold weather brings things back to normal.
