Default Newbie to this game

hello folks, Just a newbie and beginner to the fly fishing game, I bought myself a full kit to start with, rod, reel with spare spool, 2x spools of backing, 1 spool of floating line with braided loops at either end, 1x spool of intermediate line with braided loops at either end, 6 spare braided loops, 50m of 4.75lb flourocarbon and a whole load of flies.

Now I have got the backing onto the reel usung the arbour knot, then i have attached the fly line to the backing using a clinch knot.

Now I am stuck !!!

I have a braided loop, so now what do i attach and how do i do it?

any advice would be very great cheers Wullie

Hi Wullie, you now have to thread your fly line into the braided loop, all the way down. If you hold the open end of the loop in your right hand, then grip the the braid about an inch away, push toward each other and the braid will expand, this is how to thread the line.
You will then find a plastic collar near the loop, this is then pulled over the braid, all the way to the top, trim the loose ends and you are done. Tie your leader to the loop and go catch some fish.

I think Gellert and Caddis may have missunderstood you here Wullie. Now you have your backing and fly line on the reel, the next thing to attach to the other braided loop is your leader. This is generaly done when you are at the water, I tend not to leave a leader on the line when on the spool as it can tangle and/or cut into the fly line. The easiest way of attaching is the loop to loop method. You put a loop into your leader material (in this case the flourocarbon) using a knot called a perfection loop. Pass the braided loop through this loop, then pass the other end of you leader through the braided loop.

for attaching a tapered leader (thick end) to the braided loop on the fly line, i just use a 3 turn un-tucked blood knot; pass the leader through the braided loop twist it round itself 3 times and pass the end of the leader through the gap between the first twist and the braid (can't explain it better sorry) then wet the whole lot with spittle and pull tight. finally trim the "tag" end off almost flush to the knot and your done. this knot has never let me down either in course or fly fishing situations.

I guess you can also use a 3 turn clinch knot to tie the leader to the loop, which from your first post you know how to do You can also use the unit / grinner knot but i don't think I could explain it even though it's easy once a few a practiced

as for tying your fly to the leaders thin end I use a five turn un-tucked blood knot passed just the once through the eye. you can use the uni / grinner knot but i never can get it perfect without getting twisting "piggy tails" due to friction with lighter lines (works fine for 12-20lb for carp and pike mind)

hope this helps

Hi Simister, if you look at the headings at the top of the page there is one for knots, click on this and you will find instructions and drawings of most of the knots you will ever need to use for fly fishing.
