Default Subs rebate debate

Hi all,

Due to (lack of) water levels in my clubs waters, our still waters have not been stocked on there usual regular basis.

A rebate on next years subs will be announced in due course.

I have said I dont want a rebate, I would much prefer my monies being spent on something different to the rainbow clones we are catching. Largish browns being an example. Reactions to my comments have been varied to say the least.
With the resulting conclusion that it will not happen. The president of the club has suggested I approach the committee, which I will do when I have a strong enough case to do so.
Could you knowledgeable folks out there please offer some pointers, the pro's and cons of native/not native stocking, would larger fish be an advertising medium to attract new, younger members. Non game fish introduction, feed requirements and any thing else that will help sway decisions in my favour.
(Upon mentioning Pike, I had the feeling the President was weighing up going for his 12 bore or trying to finish a very uncomfortable conversation with me)

Your help and/or advice will be most gratefully received.

With deepest regards

Dave

There's always the possibility that any browns stocked might disappear, never to be seen again.

Not sure about that avatar Jim! Click the image to open in full size.

Hi

Do they allow hippies on the forum? I will check later.

It may be true that stocked browns may disappear, however advertising the fact that large browns are there would be true and maybe an incentive to new members.

Ta for the quick posts

Dave

Why do you feel big browns would be an attractor. 1-1.5lb fish would be better IMHO.

I think your average stockie rainbow basher might not welcome the challenges presented by a reversion to brown trout. That's not meant to sound churlish, it's just that a lot of anglers misunderstand the difference in behaviour that the two species exhibit.
I'm assuming that your water is bank fishing only. If the stock balance shifts in favour of brownies, your members will need to go looking for the - largely territorial - fish where previously, staying put and waiting for pods to pass will have proved sufficient. It's surprising how many rainbow trout anglers struggle with the cast and move concept, even some very good rainbow trout anglers.

Also, what SP says is correct; brownies don't like high mid summer temperatures and qwill likely go missing for long periods in a manner that more obligingly pelagic rainbows rarely do.

If the members want to pay full whack, I'd suggest using the balance in booking a day or two's demos by a well respected angler/entomologist of the likes of Skippy Crofts which will ultimately pay far greater rewards than just shovelling a few more fish in next time around.

I will forward your post to the rest of the committee Dave, though I might add, most anglers joined the club to fish for "cloned" rainbows on our reservoirs. The addition of big browns, would be a waste of money to most members, as they have to return them to the water.

i think dave has a good idea, if the closed season was to be lifted for stocked browns!
