Hi there,

This is my second season fly fishing and I can tell you that things do get better.

Forums like this and just talking to your fellow anglers on the bank will improve your catch rate no end.

Its hard to say what line, lenght of leader or fly you should use as I don't know where you are fishing. Ask the owner or warden. Also speak to anyone else fishing to see if what they are doing is working.

I think its fair to say that buzzer fishing is not the easiest art to master. Both presentation and bite detection are key to fishing buzzers and this is something that you will only gain with time.

Have you tried fishing with a blob? Last week I fished a small still water and those around me were catching on buzzers. Naturally I took the same appraoch but with no luck. I switched over to an orange blob and hey presto took a couple of nice rainbows.

Good luck!

I've found recently that fish are just not taking from the surface like the were a few weeks ago, they're rolling over CDC's and suspended buzzers trying to drown them!
Try a 6-8ft leader on a floating line with a single Damsel (hotheads/goldheads work well), slow retrieve with a sharp tug every now and again. It's pulled me out of some "blank" situations recently.

Hope this helps, Gary

Hi Keith, noticed you getting dispondent about fly fishing in a couple of posts. Keep plugging away at it mate, the rewards really are fantastic.

I know opinion is divided on casting lessons etc,but they really do pay dividends. Pulling a lure such as a damsel or blob can really switch the fish on.

Also have you tried course fish on the fly, perch can be caught on pretty much anything. If you have access to a Stillwater containing roach or rudd try for these of an evening, small black gnat dry fly.

Keep going at it mate

Sean

Hello mate,

I know how you feel! It took me time to catch my first trout and perseverance is definitely the key. I have always found fishing with a single buzzer quite hard, so tend to stay away unless fishing them in a team. Damsels seem to work very well. I usually fish one on a long leader and vary my retrieve. Keep trying mate, if it was easy it would be called catching not fishing. Good luck

Damsel: There are variations on these, Gold heads, silver heads, hot heads etc.

Click the image to open in full size.

2 methods:

Strip like hell bringing it across the top at speed.

Slow retrieve with a quick "jerk" every now and again. (no smutty comments).

Keith,
Everyone starts out that way, don't worry you will get the hang of it. I was totally lost not that long ago when it came to the flies used in the UK. What helped me was to find a few retail/wholesale sites that display the flies for sale. They are usually logically grouped by type with pictures, a great learning tool. Caledonia Fly Company - CaledoniaFly - Highland Flies you can find several like this one. Learn the Groups then the fly...
I would also suggest joining a club or find friends to learn with/from. The Oliver Edwards DVD's are very good and I would wager that there are several others that can be a big help. Hang in there, one step at a time and all of that... and you will get it! not simple, but worth the time to learn. Good luck.
