Default River rules

I have been fishing a river a couple of times a year for last few years and recently found out a fishing club own the fishing rights to the opposite bank to the bank I fish. There is nothing stating who owns the rights to the bank I fish and there is a public pathway that runs along it in the town I am from and I know a lot of locals that fish the bank.

I am wondering how far I can wade in as I have been known to wade nearer the further bank... do the club just own bank fishing rights or does their ownership continue to the middle of the river?

I know it is a pedantic question but would rather know the law than get caught out by someone from the club complaining as going to be fishing the river tomorrow.

Demarcation line is midway between the two banks and you should neither cast nor wade any further. It's also viewed as 'poor form' to wade out and fish facing 'your' bank.

The landowner will most likely hold the fishing rights on the bank you fish and it might be prudent to make inquiries as to whether you can legally fish there.

In Scotland I believe the current thinking is that you can wade to the middle of the river but you can fish the whole width.
