Default Grafham on Sunday

Hi All,

I'm off to Grafham for the first time on Sunday, I usually fish Hanningfield, and I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction with regard to tactics, location etc.

I've read the recent fishing reports and I fully intend to pick the brians of the wardens to find to maximise my chances but would appreciate any do's and don't's from any of you that are familar with this water.

The main thing that's got me concerned is the sheer size of the place. I gather it makes Hanningfield look like a puddle.

Cheers

Grafham can be daunting first time out. But it will feel a lot more manageable if your drifting and covering some water rather than bobbing around on an anchor. Not sure how its fishing at the moment but fishing from the bank tomorrow so will let you know how I get on and if I hear anything about the boats.

Suggest you pm Watson's Fancy as he is there today.

Normally methods are similar to Hanningfiield. Last I heard long drifts across the middle from the sailing club to G Buoy were working or vice versa if the wind has moved around.

Brave chap, Mot, fishing off the bank this time of year......................................

Trout fisherman magazine has a giant map of Grafham in this months issue pinpointing all the hotspots. Still on sale in Smiths yesterday.

Brave Charlie, or maybe stupid Probably my last chance to get out for a while as we are having a baby in a couple of weeks, all my usual boat partners were busy so I decided what the hell, its nice to be out anyway

Just hope I can find a quiet ish spot without too much people traffic as its looking a bit brighter than I hoped for.

Didn't turn out too bad actually. Fished from about 2pm til 6ish. Strong NW wind made it difficult. Had one fish between Gaynes cove and the dam. Lots of pulls too and a couple of others on and kicking but they weren't sticking today.

2 other chaps there both picked up a fish a piece too.

Not sure how the boats got on, certainly the ones drifting off gaynes were not picking up fish that i saw, but I think they were drifting too far out as there were plenty of fish closer in to be had.

I was fishing a floating line, 15 ft leader with a damsel on the point and two holo red diawl bachs on the droppers. Fish came to the top dropper.

Hope you have a good day tomorrow

Cheers

Well done Mot, fish are hard won off the bank in the summer.

There are certainly plenty of fish in Gaynes/Plummer - my mates had a few lost a few there in the Lexus event last Sunday.

Well that was an experience!!

My first experience of Grafham and I certainly won't forget it in a hurry.

Out at 9am, wind burn by 11am, wet by 1pm and called in by the warden by 3pm due to high winds. It was a tad hairy out there I can tell you. Big, big waves......... Even the sailing guys stayed in the bar.

Fishing was not allowed east of the line between the lodge and the water tower due to the size of the waves.

Started off with a floating line and 13ft leader. Orange blob on the point with a Holo Diawl Bach as my sole dropper 5ft from my fly line. One slight pull at that was it.

Switched to an intermediate line with the same leader set up and took a 3lb rainbow almost immediately. Had a further two pulls both of which I missed. Had this action drifing parallel to the lodge bank from the west bank passing buoy L.

My father-in-law had nowt.

Only 6 or seven other boats out there. A few fish were caught but not many, mainly over in sanctuary bay. Most of these were caught on blobs.

Right I'm off to put some aftersun on my face.........
