Default River Test - Tufton

Hi all

I have been lucky enough to be given a day fishing on the Test at Tufton in a couple of weeks. I do all my fishing on peaty Yorkshire dales rivers and know nothing of chalk streams. Do any of you have experience of this stretch - is a 9ft 5wt too much, is wading permitted/necesary, any suggested flies or tactics?

Any help you can give would be much appreciated!

Very nice.

I have only fished further up the river where they allow wading on the carriers. If you have not seen a big chalk stream the clarity is something to behold ...... first few hours you'll be glimpsing flitting shadows.

Considering the fly life this year you should get some sort of evening rise. Otherwise nymphs if they allow. Personally I think they get silly with these rules ..... they are not exactly protecting wild fish on this river.

9' #5 will be OK but an 8' #4 would be my choice especially if you can wade........... you need to get a long leader out there.

Thanks Carlos. I'll have to see if I've enough brownie points with the Enjoyment Prevention Officer to run to a new 8'#4!!
