I have been messing about with this for a while and have at last found a system that works.
As you can see from my brilliant art work

this is my method.
1. two G clamps fixed at either end of the boat
2. a running line just less than twice the length of the boat with a carabina fixed at each end.
3. the drogue cords fixed to the corresponding end of each rope.
Advantages,
1. If the boat is drifting faster at one side, pull the running line to put the drogue at that end. It will slow that end accordingly.
With practice you can use this to drift in and around bays and headlands.
2.By fixing the drogue in this manner when you need to row or motor away you DO NOT need to bring the drogue in. It just collapses against the side of the boat.
3. The drogue does not tangle itself into a knot by spinning under water.
I hope you like it and it gives you hassle free boating.
