Default alignment marks

Why do fly rods have alignment marks on the sections?
i have around 11 quality coarse rods none of these have alignment marks,
it doesnt seem hard to align the the three sections of a match rod up ,i do have section alignment marks on my poles but that is so you keep spine of pole in line
it helps keep the 16mtrs straight, though you really do not need to align it o

Some reading for you, personally, I like them.
How do I align the rod sections?

Thanks mrtrout,
but considering i have never had a problem lining up 14 to 17 rod eyes on a match rod,,i dont think i need them on a small fly rod,,,it looks good though on the wychwood a dot and line,,i thought there was a major issue here ,
if i buy a rod without line up dots,i t wont bother me ,
cheers keith

Doesn't bother me either Keith.
I have some with, and some without, very handy on my 7 piece Missionary, and I just feel it's a nice touch, but my Sages don't have them, and my Orvis do, I can live without them it's no big deal.

Alignment markings are useful in aligning the often naked butt section of some modern 4 piece fly rods.
Less fiddling about with the reel seat and certainly helps in tackling up for a sea trout session.

I would suggest that the sections of a fly rod should be alligned more presicely than a coarse road as the line you are casting with a fly rod is a lot thicker than that used on a coarse rod...

I like them, as mentioned earlier in the thread, if you have a concealed reel seat and no ring on the butt section they are very useful, also for sea trouting when you are putting rods up in the gloom.

My favourite Scotts don't have them, so I put dots on with a white paint marker pen - easy and they last.

I think it originated on salmon rods, to which they've now also added little arrows and numbers to help them attach the sections the right way round and in the correct order... There's none on my barbel rods though
